The National Council for Law Reporting (Kenya Law) is a state corporation established by the National Council for Law Reporting Act, 1994. The statutory mandate of Kenya Law is to publish the official Kenya Law Reports which are compilations of the decisions of the superior courts of Kenya, and the revision and updating the Laws of Kenya. Kenya Law is a leading publisher of public legal information.

Kenya Law is looking for highly organized and self-motivated professionals to serve in the below positions:

1.     Pupils. Ref: KL/ HR /2017/186 (6 post)

2.     Legal Assistants. Ref: KL/ HR /2017/187 (4 post)

Job Title: Pupils (6 post)

Department: Law Reporting

Reporting to: Senior Law Reporter

Terms of engagement: Six (6) months

KEY TASKS

Duties and responsibilities will entail:-

i. Reading through the cases allocated to them and identifying reportable cases as per the Law Reporting Policy;

ii. Preparation of case summaries for the cases identified as reportable as per the Law Reporting Policy;

iii. Analysing case law and synthesizing the trend of jurisprudence within a particular area of law.

iv. Researching on precedent setting authorities within varied jurisdictions of common law;

v. Writing analytical summaries of written arguments or evidence and assessing the argument in light of academic legal literature and case law;

vi. Carrying out research on changes which have taken place in the Laws of Kenya so as to facilitate revision of statutes;

vii. Conducting situational analysis of the legal systems; and


REQUIREMENT:

For consideration to this position, a candidate must have:-

i. Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized institution.

ii. Completed the academic programme at the Kenya School of Law.

iii. Good interpersonal and communication skills.

iv. Team player with proactive attitude.

Job Title: Legal Assistant (4 post)

Department: Law Reporting

Reporting to: Senior Law Reporter

Terms of engagement: 1 year.  

KEY TASKS

Duties and Responsibilities

i. Read and review case law/judgments.

ii. Analyse the judgments with a view to identifying those cases establishing jurisprudence/reportable cases for the Kenya Law Reports.

iii. Analyse the judgments with a view to identifying law reform issues.

iv. Prepare case summaries for the identified cases.

v. Monitor jurisprudence from the Courts with a view to coming up with specialized digests.

vi. Compile the Weekly Law Review Newsletter.

vii. Compile legislative updates/case law for Quarterly Bench Bulletin publication.

viii. Copy reading of legal materials and cross checking and verifying references as may be assigned.

ix. Carrying out legal research on various issues relating to revision of laws, and compiling law reform issues arising out of revision of laws of Kenya.

x. Track and monitor the legislative developments in the country.

Requirements

i. Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized institution.

ii. Completed the academic programme at Kenya School of Law

iii. Completed pupillage programme

iv. Previous experience in legal research, copy reading,  law reporting will be an added advantage

v. Good interpersonal and communication skills.

vi. Team player with proactive attitude.
