The group of Johannes Haushofer at Princeton University and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics in Nairobi, Kenya is seeking applications for a research specialist. We study the relationship between poverty and its psychological and behavioral causes and consequences. We conduct lab and field experiments in both developing and developed countries, using approaches from economics and psychology. The position is based at the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics in Nairobi, Kenya.
The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of our work, particularly around planning and execution of field and lab experiments and data analysis. Responsibilities include supervising the planning and implementation of lab and field studies, managing field and lab teams, programming tasks and questionnaires, analyzing data, preparing academic papers, and contributing to grant-writing, ethics approvals, and budgeting. The position is particularly appropriate for candidates with backgrounds in quantitative social science and experience in experimental methods and overseeing field studies.
A two-year commitment is desired. Initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility for renewal pending satisfactory performance and funding availability. The proposed start date is flexible. Applications will be evaluated beginning immediately, and will continue until the hiring process is complete.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics, political science, psychology, mathematics, or related discipline
- Strong skills in econometrics and programming (STATA, Python, R, Matlab)
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Strong managerial and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous research experience in designing and conducting field and/or lab experiments
- Previous experience conducting research in developing countries
- Interest and training in development and behavioral economics
- Grant writing experience
