Quantitative Field Interviewers

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

The APHRC invites applications for Quantitative Field Interviewers in its the Remaking of the Family in East Africa (FamilEA) project to support the quantitative data collection for the study.

Duties and Responsibilities

The project’s main objective is to map out the shifting family landscape of residents of the Nairobi metropolis, including family networks based outside the city, which is termed the family archipelago. As such, the project will adopt a mixed methods (quantitative-qualitative) approach that will extend beyond the household and conjugal family to the extended family and family-like relationships, such as friendships.

  • Mobilize study participants in accordance with predefined criteria outlined in the study guidelines.
  • Conduct quantitative in-person interviews with study participants following the provided questionnaire and protocols.
  • Ensure accurate and complete data collection during interviews, paying attention to detail and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Edit and submit collected data for daily cross-checking and verification by the designated team leader.
  • Fill in and submit daily field reports/timesheets accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Attend all scheduled training sessions and progress meetings as required by the project team.
  • Maintain the safety and responsible handling of all study tools and equipment provided for the interviews.
  • Assist the research team in other project-related activities as needed.
  • Any other tasks assigned by the supervisor to further the project’s objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C Plain.
  • Fluency in both Swahili and English, both written and oral.
  • Experience in electronic data collection methods like SurveyCTO or Open Data Kit (ODK) is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and accountability.
  • Familiarity with the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and its surrounding counties.
  • Ability to adhere to protocols and guidelines for data collection, ensuring ethical conduct throughout the research process.

QUALITATIVE FIELD INTERVIEWERS (5)

The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

The APHRC invites applications for Qualitative Field Interviewers in a project that is aimed at building the Implementation Research capacities of Africa’s Universities and Research Institutions.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct key informant and in depth interviews.
  • Conduct online interviews and make follow-ups on incomplete interviews.
  • Write and submit comprehensive notes of data collection and any other observations.
  • Any other related task assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in a health-related discipline.
  • Proven experience in qualitative data collection – i.e. conducting key informant interviews and in depth interviews.
  • Experience in conducting desk reviews.
  • Knowledge of scientific publishing and/or journals landscape will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Must be fully available for the engagement period.
