ILRI Hiring PhD Graduate Fellowship- Climate Change and Conflict: Mitigation through Insurance

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seek to recruit a PhD graduate fellow to work on Climate Change and Conflict: Mitigation through Insurance. The successful fellow will be hosted by the Sustainable Livestock Systems (SLS) program at ILRI.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.

It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers (https://www.cgiar.org/ ) dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices in East, South and Southern Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

The SLS program brings together technologies and approaches in a systems context to address synergies and trade-offs to optimize the economic, social and environmental roles of livestock.

It also addresses the two-way interactions between livestock and the environment; while livestock production is often a driver of environmental change, future climate change will have significant impacts on livestock production. https://www.ilri.org/research/programs/sustainable-livestock-systems

Scope of Work

The project titled “Climate Change and Conflict: Mitigation through Insurance? (CCIC)“ is implementing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with pastoralists in Kenya and Ethiopia.

The project cross-randomizes an encouragement design to promote uptake of livestock insurance with an edutainment intervention that aims to reduce conflict. It aims to test whether the edutainment intervention in combination with livestock insurance can help in mitigating resource-based conflict among pastoralist communities.

Consistent with the project’s objectives, the graduate fellow will implement an edutainment intervention as part of the CCIC project to assess its effect on cooperation among pastoralists.

The graduate fellow will further contribute to the design and implementation of additional project activities including the insurance interventions, development of data collection tools and participation in data collection, and facilitation of meetings/engagements with stakeholders and project partners. They are expected to utilize project data for their thesis. This fellowship will further strengthen collaboration with local academic institutions.

Responsibilities of the fellow:

  1. Implement an edutainment intervention as assigned by the supervisors to test its effect on cooperation among pastoralists.
  2. Contribute to the design of data collection tools and implementation of actual data collection following protocols and procedures developed by the project team.
  3. Conduct data analysis for the edutainment intervention following the protocol and guidelines developed by the project team.
  4. Participate actively and regularly in project meetings.
  5. Submit monthly progress reports to the supervisors and maintain effective communication with the supervisors.
  6. Support other project activities as assigned by the supervisors and project principal investigators.
  7. Support the identification and implementation of peacebuilding/conflict mitigation interventions.
  8. Ensure good collaboration with project partners.
