The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a global research organization dedicated to improving the lives and livelihoods of people in developing countries through sustainable livestock production. Established in 1994, ILRI operates as part of the CGIAR (Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research) consortium, with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
ILRI’s mission is to harness the potential of livestock as a pathway to poverty alleviation, food security, and environmental sustainability. The institute conducts cutting-edge research in areas such as animal health, genetics, and nutrition, as well as broader issues related to livestock systems, climate change, and gender equity. ILRI works closely with national governments, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector to ensure that its research leads to practical solutions that benefit farmers, herders, and communities.
With a focus on innovation and collaboration, ILRI aims to make livestock systems more productive, resilient, and environmentally friendly, while also addressing challenges like disease outbreaks and the impact of climate change. Through its work, ILRI plays a vital role in transforming the agricultural landscape, particularly in Africa and Asia, contributing to global efforts to reduce hunger and poverty.
