Position Details

  • Job Title: Custodian
  • Location: U.S. Embassy Compound, Nairobi, Kenya
  • Monthly Salary Range: KES 74,549.25 – KES 134,130.42 /Per Month
  • Work Schedule: Full-time – 40 hours per week
  • Start Date: Candidates must be available to begin work within 4 weeks of receiving agency authorization and/or required clearances.

About the Role

As a Custodian at the U.S. Embassy, you will report to the Custodial Supervisor and work as part of a dedicated team. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the Embassy compound and associated properties. This is a hands-on role that requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and physical stamina.

The role is critical in maintaining sanitary health and safety standards, supporting events and operations, and fostering a clean and professional environment for Embassy staff and visitors.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Custodian’s role encompasses a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  1. Janitorial and Cleaning Services
    • Performing scheduled and unscheduled cleaning tasks in offices, buildings, garages, shops, plaza areas, and entrances/exits.
    • Maintaining high standards of sanitation in shared spaces to promote health and safety.
    • Operating cleaning equipment and ensuring proper maintenance and storage of tools and materials.
  2. Labor and Support Tasks
    • Assisting with moving furniture, appliances, and equipment.
    • Loading and unloading shipments, including opening and moving crates and boxes.
    • Supporting event setups by arranging chairs, tables, and other equipment for conferences, ceremonies, and other official events.
  3. Safety and Hazard Reporting
    • Identifying and reporting hazardous conditions to the supervisor.
    • Adhering to established safety protocols and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
    • Informing supervisors of accidents, illnesses, or injuries promptly.
  4. Contractor Escorting
    • Assisting with escorting contractors and ensuring they comply with Embassy protocols.

This role is vital to ensuring that the U.S. Embassy remains a safe, functional, and professional environment for all.


Skills and Abilities Required

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Independence and Reliability: Ability to work independently while following instructions and schedules.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy loads.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficiency in using electronic carts (e.g., golf carts), hand trucks, and other tools.
  • Attention to Safety: Commitment to following safety and health protocols, reporting hazards, and using PPE appropriately.
  • Adaptability: Ability to perform diverse tasks, from janitorial work to event setup, with efficiency and care.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Experience
    • At least one year of general work experience is required.
  2. Education
    • Completion of secondary school (high school) is mandatory.
  3. Language Proficiency
    • Level III (Good Working Knowledge) proficiency in both English and Kiswahili is required (reading, speaking, and writing). Applicants may be tested on language skills.
  4. Technical Knowledge
    • General understanding of the use, care, storage, and maintenance of cleaning equipment and materials.
