KNCHR Hiring Human Rights Monitors

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent National Human Rights Institution established under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and operationalized by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act, 2011. KNCHR operates in alignment with the United Nations Paris Principles and is mandated to promote and protect human rights in Kenya.

As a constitutional watchdog, KNCHR monitors the government’s compliance with human rights obligations and provides leadership in creating a human rights-respecting culture in the country. The Commission fulfils its mandate through five directorates: Complaints and Investigations, Research, Advocacy and Outreach, Legal Services, Regional Services, and Corporate Services. KNCHR operates regional offices in Nairobi, Wajir, Kitale, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyahururu, Isiolo, Garissa, and Kajiado counties.

KNCHR invites applications for the following position:

  1. Human Rights Monitors will support KNCHR in monitoring the human rights situation in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa counties. This includes collecting and observing data on human rights violations involving communities, state, and non-state actors, with a focus on the rights and welfare of the borderland population. Scope of Work
    1. Attend mandatory training sessions conducted by KNCHR.Use KNCHR-provided tools to collect accurate and factual information on human rights violations in the assigned county.Report any human rights violations in the assigned county promptly.Provide periodic reports to KNCHR on the status of human rights in the assigned county, adhering to specified timelines.Assist and accompany KNCHR teams visiting the assigned county during planned or unplanned missions.Submit a final report detailing human rights compliance in the respective county at the end of the contract period.
    Minimum Qualifications and Skills
    • Education: KCSE Grade D+ and a certificate in a related field.Experience: At least three (3) years of active experience in human rights, research, or social work.Residency: Must be a resident of Mandera, Wajir, or Garissa County.Language Skills: Proficiency in local languages as well as English and Kiswahili.IT Skills: Competence in Microsoft Office tools.Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills.Engagement Skills: Ability to interact effectively with local leaders, security officials, elders, youth, and women on human rights and security issues.Understanding: Knowledge of the political and social dynamics of the respective county.Personal Attributes: Strong interpersonal skills, good etiquette, and cultural sensitivity.
