Associate Professorship of African Politics

University of Oxford – Oxford Department of International Development in association with St Antony’s College

The Oxford Department of International Development invites applications for the post of Associate Professor of African Politics, to start on 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will join one of the largest and most successful scholarly communities engaged in the study of Africa across the social sciences, humanities and medical sciences. She or he will be an outstanding scholar, who will take a leading role in consolidating and enhancing Oxford’s reputation in the field of African politics, and will play a part in shaping the broader intellectual agenda in the study of politics in the developing world within the Department and beyond.

The appointment will be made in association with a non-tutorial fellowship at St Antony’s College, which offers a housing allowance of £2,414 p.a. and other benefits.

The successful candidate should have a doctorate in politics, political science, international development, history, or a cognate discipline, with a strong African focus;  an outstanding research and publication record, commensurate with stage of academic career, with a particular focus on aspects of African politics and their interplay with development; university teaching experience in areas related to African politics and development at the postgraduate level, including thesis supervision; and a record of securing competitive external funding for research.

The appointee will be required to engage in research; to provide teaching and supervision to graduate students on taught courses, in particular the MPhil in Development Studies; to supervise doctoral research students; to undertake assessment and admissions duties for the MPhil in Development Studies and other degrees in the Department; and to play an active role as a college Governing Body Fellow: as a trustee, advising students, serving on committees and participating in college events.

Associate professors who are awarded the title of full professor may receive from the University an additional salary payment of £2,700 p.a.
