    1.) #RELEVANCE- Before you apply for any job,make sure that your qualifications are in line with the advertised job. That is your qualifications and the job are related,even though not fully. Relevance matters a lot if you are to get a job. Someone who has been a gatekeeper for ten years Vs you a banker. If you two apply for a gate keeping job, you stand no chance of getting the job.

    2.) #RESEARCH – Make sure that you have in depth knowledge of the firm,company or institution that you are applying the job to. What does it do? When was it started? What are it’s contributions to the economy? Who are the executive/ owners of the firm? What are the goals, mission and vision of the firm? Knowing all this will help you answer a question like,”why should we give you the job?” Or “What expertise/ new thing/ changes will you bring on board shd we give you the job?”

    3.) #PAPERSFACTOR-I always tell people that having a lot of papers with you is an added advantage. Make sure that during weekends, online,long distance, engage in classes part time in several courses to give you more papers. Get as many certificates as possible. Partake in any volunteer activity near you. Go for seminars and conferences. Get those papers. Certificates of good conduct, academic papers,testimonials, red cross, church youth,choir, CWA,CMA,name it. Clean towns and get participation papers. But most of us prefer sitting in front of screens watching soaps and DJ Afro. Watching other people make their money.

    4.) #MEMORYTRICK- In an interview,every panelist has got pre-agreed roles. Take note of the names of the panelists and their roles in the institution. There is a panelist who always notes down whether you refer to the panelists by their names as you speak or you’ve forgotten. If possible,please note them down. No one will penalize you for jotting anything down.

    5.) 4- ENGLISH SKILLS
    In an interview,that is not an exam room. The panelists expect you to ask questions,and note Down something as they talk. This is how they get to know of your writing/ note taking skills,listening skills,speaking skills. It is now a common thing in every interview for the panelists to give you a written page,a few paragraphs for you to read out aloud. To check on your articulation and voice projection. You must be careful.

    6.) #SALARY/ #PAY QUESTION.
    This is a tricky part and most people lose on the job because they show how over ambitious they are. And the employer,instead of disappointing you,they will let you go. Do a research. People in your field, how are they paid elsewhere? What is the pegged,agreed,accepted and expected pay for people like you? It doesn’t matter how qualified you are or the papers you have. Qualifications and papers will only help you get the job first, then promoted later. If your job should pay 20k, saying you expect 40-50k is unreasonable. The panel will not tell you they pay 20k. Instead, they will drop you. Often,quote a figure slightly higher than the shd- be pay. If 20k,say 25-30k, if 40k,say 45-50k. You’ll pass that.

    7.) #PRESENTATION- Do you have a document file or you carry your papers in a mere envelope? How are you dressed? We talk of smartly dressed. Be presentable. Let no one notice how well or badly dressed you are. Don’t draw attention to yourself. If you don’t do specs or heels,that’s not the time to don them. If you don’t do tight skirts or dresses, that’s not your day. Be comfortable. No tight fitting clothes that show your body shape. It’s the small things that matter.

    8.) #ETIQUETTE – There’s always a panelist taking note on the frequency of the words,excuse me,am sorry,i beg your pardon,pardon me i didn’t get you right right, thank you etc. Very key. Sit when asked to. Thank everyone as you leave the room. “Thank you for the invitation and the offer.” Just be courteous. Even if you’ve never been,here you have no choice. But don’t overdo it. Stay real. Be yourself. Don’t fake it.

    9.) #GENERAL #KNOWLEDGE- My friend, if you don’t know the colours of the Kenyan Flag,the 2nd stanza of the National Anthem word for word,the images in a Kenyan 1 shilling coin( tail side),the Gvt owned banks in Kenya, the 5th vice president of Kenya,Who won the recent state Commendation, when Uhuru Kenyatta was born,how many millions make a billion,what to do during a fire or robbery at work, my friend,just don’t attend the interview. Here,nobody can help you. It’s you and your good God.

    10.) #MISCELLANEOUS
    We have other basics that you as a person fit to get the job shd know. As you read,do you touch whatever your read or use your finger to read? Do you move/ bend your head while reading? Haha. Do you move your lips while reading? As you turn the pages of a newspaper you’re given( common drill- you are told to open pg 35,any page) do you make noises as you flip the pages). There’s a way to open a book or newspaper. As you sip tea or eat,do you make that irritating sound? Do you bother washing your hands? In a round table,they’ll put tea or tea leaves bags farthest from you. What do you do? Bend all the way to pick them? Ask for them? How? Do you say pls? Thank you?
