Purpose
 Manchester United’s Media portfolio engages millions of fans every day across the globe. An exciting vacancy has arisen within this team; Head of Social Media. With the club recently announcing that it has 1.1 billion fans worldwide, there is no more exciting role within the media industry right now, where your daily work could literally touch billions of fans.
This is a unique opportunity for an analytical, organised and creative individual to lead one of the world’s largest branded social media portfolios.
We’re looking for an industry leading, established, creative and highly organised Social Media professional, who has experience leading in-house Social Media teams, or has managed teams within one of the big media agencies. We’re looking for an energetic, culture change catalyst- someone who is obsessed with data, but equally obsessed with new and interesting ways to connect with fans. Our Social Media team is a group of award winning, tech savvy, ‘social first’ twenty-somethings, who have fostered a unique culture that helps us connect with fans on social media, 24/7 365 days a year, and wherever they are across the planet.
This is someone who can turn data into insights, using our social listening tools and data from native analytics platforms. Social Media is in an exciting phase in that we’re immersed with data, and we want this individual to lead the way in sharing and evangelising a data-driven approach across the business.
The Role
Working closely with the club’s marketing function you will be responsible for developing and implementing the Global Social strategies for Manchester United.
  • Ownership and responsibility of the content and engagement strategy for Manchester United’s social channels, including: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn
  • Content Roadmap and posting strategy, considering content pillars, localisation and creating daily habits for fans.
  • Ownership of growth KPIs across Social, and responsible for innovation and launch of new Social products and platforms to stimulate growth.
  • Management of agencies and resources which look after foreign language accounts such as Weibo, WeChat, Line and Douyin.
  • Management of the Social Media team, including the rota and rostering team members and freelancers on match day and unsociable hours shifts. Co-located across Old Trafford (stadium) and AON Training Complex (training ground).
  • Generate, edit, publish and approve engaging daily content.
  • Management of key senior relationships with Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • Content ideas, creative thinking and invention of native content ‘franchises’ to engage fans on network.
  • Responsible for driving value back to the club channels and departments, such as the club’s website (traffic), app (downloads), retail and ticketing.
  • Lean in and assist with the club’s paid social marketing efforts.
  • Working with other club departments so they can maximise value from our Social Media channels; Commercial, Ticketing, Retail, Foundation and Football.
  • Assisting players and player agents with content and strategy.
  • Deep understanding of analytics and an ability to implement an analytical culture within the team.
  • Benchmarking and researching Social Media trends so we can be ahead of the curve.
The Person
This individual will have significant social media experience, ideally across big brands and businesses.  Creativity must be combined with a strategic, analytical mind set. We want someone obsessed with the social media industry, and the place of Social in the fan engagement funnel. Strong experience of analytics tools and platforms is a must, and you must be able to turn data into insight for making better decisions. A team player who has a collaborative approach; proven management experience, including delegation, motivation, crisis management and driving a team to achieve results.
This individual must have exemplary interpersonal skills, and an ability to get the best out of junior staff, and communicate across territories and borders. The individual must also be able to work across departments, including knowing how to manage stakeholders such as our football staff, owners and sponsors.
  • Minimum Bachelors Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience running large branded social channel(s), preferably within the Sports industry.
  • Vast knowledge of Western Social Media platforms, as well as knowledge of market specific social channels, for example like those in China, Japan and Thailand.
  • Excellent Copywriting skills and attention to detail.
  • Solid knowledge of analytical tools, scheduling tools, and paid social marketing.
  • Experience working with CRM, SEO and Analytics teams, and using Social to drive value back to the business.
  • Knowledge of Online Marketing channels and growth techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
