MMWCA Hiring General Manager, Olare Motorogi Conservancy

Job Summary

The Olare Motorogi Conservancy (http://olaremotorogiconservancy.com) operates in a way that benefits all parties involved, combining conservation, tourism and traditional pastoralism to make the Conservancy self-sufficient. Olare Motorogi Conservancy (OMC) is a partnership between over 300 landowners and five tourism operations: Porini Lion Camp, Kicheche Bush Camp, Mara Plains Camp, Olare Mara Kempinski and Mahali Mzuri. The purpose of this General Manager role, drawing on previous experience in administration and knowledge of the conservancy landscape in the Mara, is to develop and lead the administration and management of Olare Motorogi Conservancy. The General Manager will need to display a high level of initiative and independence and will report directly to the Board.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities 

FIELD OPERATIONS  -Oversee the Field Operations Manager in delivering professional and efficient services within the Conservancy. 

  • Responsible to ensure that OMC’s management organizational structure is efficient, well resourced and coordinated. 
  • Develop and submit annual work plans and related budgets for Board approval, manage these approved budgets and work plans.
  • Formulate and manage Grazing plans in consultation with grazing committees of OMC.

ACCOUNTS – Oversee management of accounts and budgetary control, including: 

  • Manage the accountant to maintain approved accounting policies with respect to expenditure control, cash flow management, procurement, accounts, payments, petty cash and payroll.
  • Ensure internal controls are followed in line with conservancy accounting policies and liaise with OMC auditors on the annual statutory audit.
  • Ensure compliance of the conservancy with all taxation and statutory obligations.
  • Oversee a transparent system for reporting bed night occupancy in the conservancy.

LEGAL, HR & ADMINISTRATION – Oversee administrative systems in support of OMC operations including communications, IT systems, office space, associated equipment and vehicles with the support of the Conservancy Administrator.

  • Fully organise the logistics of and participate in OMC Board meetings.
  • Report to the Board regularly on all salient issues and give detailed updates at each Board meeting.
  • Ensure the conservancy is compliant with approved Minutes and Resolutions filed in line with the Articles of Association and Shareholders Agreement
  • Supervise and work closely with the Administrator on all land and lease record issues, including lease registration, mapping and legal issues.
  • Ensure all statutory permits and licenses are up-to-date, and all agreements with third parties are maintained and adhered to.
  • Support and Coordinate to ensure Landholding Company entities file annual accounts and company secretary files annual returns
  • Oversee OMC’s HR management

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Represent OMC as required in meetings and in communications with strategic partners, including MMWCA, government agencies, donors, communities, civil society and other conservation organizations. 
  • Liaise with tourism partners over OMC plans and activities in order to uphold and enhance the tourism product.
  • Develop an effective internal communications strategy to inform all OMC stakeholders and particularly grassroots landowners on strategies and achievements
  • Oversee OMC’s marketing and communications in consultation with the Board. Promote a positive image of OMC wherever possible through communications. 

Requirements

  • Proven managerial experience with 10 years’ experience or more ideally within a conservation context
  • Experience handling financial reports such as Budgets, P&L and Balance Sheets
  • Proven experience managing teams of people, and engaging with diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills
  • Kiswahili desirable
  • Familiarity with Kenya and the Masai Mara desirable
  • Familiarity or background with tourism desirable
