How To Write Good CURRICULUM VATAE In 2024

Importance of the CV:

– CV is needed during the application for internships, graduate trainee programs and entry level jobs

– Well organized CV is the 1st step for a polished job hunter.

– More than half of the questions in the interview are from your CV!

– CV is the first impression for you in the interview.

CV Tips:

  1. Make a folder for Your certificates and a CV draft and always update them.
  2. Write your CV according to the application and specialty you are applying for.
  3. Do not send your CV as word doc. Send it as PDF file, if sent as word doc the format may become distorted.
  4. Number of pages of the CV from 2 to 4.
  5. Avoid graphics, coloring ink.
  6. Print Laser, Use High quality A4 paper, do not print on both sides.
  7. Name/Save you CV by your names, eg. Sharon Lari CV instead of CV 1, Curriculum Vitae Final etc
  8. Avoid Abbreviations.
  9. Avoid writing your excellent in English/French/German or other language unless you have a Valid professional language certificate like ILETS.
  10. After you write your CV, ask your close friend to review it before the interview.
  11. – Never Lie!
  12. Unfinished courses should be included on CV only if relevant to job you applying eg.  Instead of writing ‘Incomplete course’ write – intended to complete in 2025, this shows progress and growth in your career

CV Writing Guidelines  

Make it easy on the eye:

Font size:

– Size 16 for your name and CURRICULUM VITAE + bold (ALL With Capital letters).

– Size 14 for Headlines + bold (ALL With Capital letters).

– Size 12 details underneath the Headlines.

– Avoid using differing fonts and formatting in each section.

– Use the same font throughout like Times New Roman or Arial.

– Years should be on the left of the page, only write months + Years in the training experience, all in Gregorian date

– Color of background page should ve light colour.

– Coloring for all sections should be deep colourt.

– Include page borders and numbers.

– Keep one space between the sections.

– Use a constant format.

  • Chronology:

Your information should be in chronological (newest to oldest) order and consistent from the start of the CV through the entire document and until its end.

  •  Consistency:

Ensure that the layout, margins, alignment, spacing, and the structure of your CV are consistent throughout and do not differ from section to section.

  •  Use punctuation marks and capitalization carefully.
  •  Check your spelling and grammar!!
  •  Do not fabricate or embellish any information:

Your CV is a statement of fact, and if it is found to include information that is untrue you will at the very least lose out on your application chances and at worst land in serious trouble with law

Chronological sections:

  1. Personal data

Includes your name, phone number starts with +254, professional email and your status now for example Communications Intern with optional photo in the right upper corner.

– Do not include irrelevant personal information like your age, date of birth, marital status and address!

– Write your name in CAPITAL LETTERS.

– Then write CURRICULUM VATAE in the middle with CAPITAL LETTERS, better to put the Underline.
