Job Description:
The ICU/HDU Coordinator will oversee the efficient operations of the ICU and HDU departments at the main hospital. This role requires strategic leadership, operational management, and hands-on involvement to ensure outstanding patient care and staff efficiency.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Operational Management:
- Supervise and ensure the efficient running of the ICU and HDU departments.
- Coordinate and direct the daily patient care operations within the Critical Care Unit.
- Analyze workloads and skill requirements to meet patient care needs effectively.
2. Staff Supervision and Development:
- Assess staff competencies and assign patient care responsibilities accordingly.
- Delegate appropriate tasks consistent with legal and professional guidelines.
- Conduct performance appraisals for department clinical staff.
- Ensure staff competence and efficiency in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitude.
- Collaborate with the HR department to manage staff welfare, training, and development.
3. Patient Care and Communication:
- Maintain clear communication with the Clinical Nurse Manager regarding unit needs and/or incidents.
- Assist with patient care when necessary.
- Facilitate and participate in morbidity/mortality meetings and Multi-Disciplinary Meetings.
- Provide second on-call coverage as needed.
4. Quality and Compliance:
- Identify and enforce appropriate internal controls for the department.
- Ensure compliance with legal and professional standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and provide reports as required.
5. Resource Management:
- Ensure the unit is well-equipped with functioning equipment.
- Prepare budgets and procure capital items to specification.
- Maintain adequate supplies for the unit at all times.
6. Leadership and Team Building:
- Create a work environment fostering personal integrity, team spirit, and high-performance standards.
- Act as a mentor and trainer for staff, enhancing their skills and knowledge.
- Report on clinical issues to the Director of Medical Services as required.
7. Other Duties:
- Undertake any other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB).
- Minimum of three years as a Senior Medical Officer.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in ICU or Critical Care.
- Experience in the clinical management of pediatric and adult cardiac cases.
- Supervisory experience and ability to train and develop staff.
- Registered with KMPDC with a valid practicing license.
- A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
