Médecins Sans Frontières Hiring Antimicrobial Resistance Learning Coordinator – Nairobi

by Adonai
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides assistance in more than 80 countries to populations in distress, to victims of natural or manmade disasters and to victims of armed conflicts, without discrimination and irrespective of origin, religion, creed or political affiliation.

Antimicrobial Resistance Learning Coordinator (m/f/x)
Brussels or Nairobi – MSF Academy for Healthcare

CONTEXT

The MSF Academy for Healthcare is an intersectional training initiative that focuses on strengthening the skills and competencies of healthcare workers in MSF projects, with the aim to have a long-term impact on the quality of care in the countries where MSF intervenes.

Our Academy field teams are present in Central African Republic, South Sudan, Mali, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Yemen, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and soon in Democratic Republic of Congo. Emphasis is placed on MSF’s locally hired staff, especially in the countries with the largest gaps in human resources for health (HRH) capacity (e.g. nursing staff in MSF-supported hospitals).

Beyond MSF projects, the Academy also liaises with health authorities for joint recognition of its learning programs and support to governmental programs. Our objective is to maintain a uniform educational approach in all our projects: competency-based learning; on-the-job training with the presence of strong tutors or clinical mentors; while striving to achieve appropriate accreditations for all trainings, often in collaboration with partner teaching institutes. Discover more about it on MSF Academy for Healthcare.

We have a growing “global team”, composed of the director, deputy director, resource manager and 3 project managers as well as a strong technical team comprising medical experts and learning science experts to support our projects, and a group of distance-learning clinical mentors. In the countries where a training program is implemented, strong country teams are present. The global team counts around 26 staff, and the field-based teams have around 70 staff.

As part of the ambition to fight antibiotic resistance in MSF projects, the MSF Operational Center Amsterdam (OCA) and the MSF Academy have developed the AMR learning program to train “Infection Prevention and Control” (IPC) supervisors/managers and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) focal points in MSF projects from all MSF operational centers.

For this program, we are partnering with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) and collaborating with MSF advisers and referents for the development and updating of the curriculum content, as well as or converting the program delivery into an e-learning format. Key to the success of this learning program is the development and implementation of an efficient strategy of clinical mentorship, led by the MSF Academy based on its existing experience in this field.

Providing access to an internationally recognized Diploma course aiming to improve both the technical and managerial competencies of MSF Locally Hired Staff (LHS) working as focal points for IPC and AMS, these IPC and AMS courses are provided both in French and English, with clinical mentoring provided to each participant, alongside the course, to facilitate integration and transfer of its learning into the working practice.

Each course lasts 10 months and is structured in 5 modules, corresponding to a total of 160 hours of learning, including clinical mentoring. This AMR course program is implemented by the MSF Academy for Healthcare, in close coordination with all the MSF Operational Centers and under the management of an MSF Academy program manager.

As AMR Learning Coordinator, you lead and manage our IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) and AMS (Antimicrobial Stewardship) learning programs. You coordinate and oversee a team of 7 clinical mentors, with IPC and/or AMR expertise, developing the competencies of approximately 80 learners annually, and representing the program to internal and international partners. Under the supervision of the Project manager, you also work with involved members of the MSF Academy team.

If selected, you’ll first undergo a proper handover and induction to the position and you will have to undertake either the IPC or AMS training on the Tembo online learning platform in order to ensure your mentoring role.
