Communication Officer

Background

The University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) has received project funding from TAKEDA Pharmaceuticals Global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The ENGAGE project aims to create a health-focused machine learning training program for young women in Kenya, enabling them to become data scientists and improve community health. In collaboration with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and several Kenyan universities, this project will empower women to make a transformative impact in their communities.

To achieve these goals, the University seeks a highly motivated and skilled Communication Officer to provide critical support for the project’s communication and visibility needs.

Job Description

As a Communication Officer, you will play a vital role in enhancing the visibility of the ENGAGE Project through effective communication strategies. Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  1. Content Management:
    • Organize and manage the project’s photo and video library, ensuring all materials are well-structured, updated, and accessible for project use.
  2. Story Development:
    • Maintain strong relationships with project staff to gather story leads and success stories.
    • Regularly check in with staff to identify compelling stories that demonstrate the project’s impact.
  3. Audio-Visual Content Creation:
    • Develop and disseminate audio and video content, including beneficiary stories, to highlight the project’s work and achievements.
    • Provide technical support in photography, videography, editing, and production for urgent needs or impactful documentation.
  4. Tool and Job Aid Development:
    • Design, copywrite, and develop project tools and job aids in compliance with the donor’s branding and marking guidelines.
  5. Communication Strategy:
    • Collaborate with the Project Manager to develop and implement a communications plan that tracks the project’s impact in the community.
  6. Digital Presence:
    • Maintain and create content for blogs, news channels, and social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Facebook.
    • Share updates with the project management team regularly.
  7. Stakeholder Communication:
    • Design and disseminate factsheets and quarterly reports to relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  8. Documentation and Visibility:
    • Support the creation of technical briefs, learning series, case studies, documentaries, and high-impact stories that showcase the project’s outcomes.
    • Respond promptly to immediate communication requests from the Project Manager.

Job Specifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Skills and Experience:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with fluency in English and Swahili.
    • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading abilities.
    • Proficiency in photography, videography, and Adobe Creative Suite (or similar software).
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a proactive and results-oriented manner.
