About the LIFT Northern Kenya Project

The LIFT Northern Kenya project is a groundbreaking initiative designed to implement a climate crisis-adapted, “green” version of BOMA’s Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP). This model is aimed at empowering women, youth, and refugees by helping them establish sustainable, climate-smart businesses. The project will be implemented across Marsabit, Samburu, and Turkana counties, as well as Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlements over a period of three years.

BOMA, as the lead partner, will work in collaboration with Danish Church Aid (DCA) and Smart Regional Consultants (SRC) to facilitate competitive and profitable green enterprises that ensure economic resilience and environmental conservation.

Job Position: Mentor – LIFT Northern Kenya (Turkana)

Key Responsibilities

As a Mentor, you will be responsible for supporting the successful implementation of the REAP – LIFT program by ensuring small business enterprises are well-trained and mentored for sustainable growth. Your main duties will include:

  • Managing the LIFT Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) by guiding program participants to establish businesses that enhance their livelihoods and promote environmental conservation.
  • Providing mentorship to an assigned number of small business enterprises under the REAP – LIFT program.
  • Collaborating with communities and BOMA Location Committees to identify and select eligible women for the program using Participatory Wealth Ranking and Participatory Rural Appraisal tools.
  • Conducting regular meetings with Business Groups (BGs) to provide guidance on decision-making, business management, and sustainability.
  • Facilitating business and savings skills training, including financial management, climate-smart entrepreneurship, and climate change adaptation.
  • Supporting the transition of mentees into green enterprises by ensuring successful production, trade, and value addition.
  • Conducting weekly visits to business groups and savings groups for mentorship, monitoring, and problem-solving.
  • Collecting and analyzing business performance data using BOMA’s TaroWorks system and submitting quality reports.
  • Representing BOMA at local development committees and engaging with stakeholders in the designated project locations.
  • Reviewing payment documents submitted at the Cluster Office and transmitting them to the Head Office for processing.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A Diploma in Community Development, Social Work, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in data collection and mentorship is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with local communities and BOMA field officers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Fluency in English, Swahili, and the local language of the designated area.
  • Must be a native of the respective location where the application is being made.
  • A valid motorcycle license and experience riding a motorcycle are highly encouraged. However, candidates without a license must be willing to obtain one within the first three months of employment.
