Purpose Statement
To oversee the day-to-day operations of the inpatient unit and ensure efficient and effective functioning by managing a team of medical staff, coordinating workflow, and optimizing processes to meet operational goals while delivering high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
People & Team Management
- Ensure efficient utilization of inpatient doctors by liaising with the Medical Services Manager for optimal staff levels, overtime, and locum coverage.
- Identify training gaps and collaborate with HR to facilitate training and professional development.
- Foster staff motivation and engagement, minimizing attrition through regular staff meetings and addressing concerns promptly.
- Implement reward and recognition programs for high-performing staff while ensuring disciplinary measures are undertaken per policies.
- Supervise all resident and locum medical officers within the inpatient unit.
Operational Excellence & Patient Care
- Ensure effective functioning of inpatient wards and theatre by facilitating smooth admissions, treatments, and discharge processes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary care for patients requiring specialized interventions.
- Monitor turnaround times for services and intervene where necessary to improve efficiency.
- Participate as a member of the hospital’s clinical governance committees and ensure implementation of recommendations.
- Conduct clinical duties and on-call responsibilities, strictly adhering to Avenue Healthcare’s policies against private practice.
Corporate Governance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to Avenue Healthcare corporate governance policies.
- Prevent, detect, and report any fraud or criminal activity.
- Review and implement audit recommendations to maintain high clinical and operational standards.
Quality & Safety Standards
- Oversee Clinical Governance Committee meetings, ensuring documentation of minutes and closure of action points.
- Maintain up-to-date clinical privileging records for all inpatient doctors and specialists.
- Develop care protocols, standard treatment guidelines, and patient care pathways in collaboration with medical leadership and stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with care protocols and quality improvement initiatives assigned by the Medical Services Manager.
- Conduct timely investigations of unexpected deaths, escalating findings for incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Ensure proper documentation of patient notes and timely consultations with specialists.
- Enforce infection control policies and best practices across all inpatient units.
- Implement medication policies to prevent prescription errors and ensure patient safety.
Patient Satisfaction & Confidentiality
- Ensure high patient satisfaction through quality care, effective communication, and timely feedback collection.
- Address and resolve patient concerns, escalating unresolved issues as necessary.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Incident Management & Reporting
- Ensure that all sentinel incidents/events are reported within 24 hours using the designated reporting tools.
- Monitor and review quality indicator reports, implementing necessary corrective actions.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor in line with the job description and hospital policies.
Person Specification
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science.
- Licensure: Valid Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists Board License (KMPDB).
- Certifications: Updated Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certificate.
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of post-internship experience.
- Experience in clinical leadership.
