Position Overview: The Senior Communications Officer will play a crucial role in advancing AWARD’s mission and visibility. This role is responsible for developing, executing, and evaluating strategic communications across multiple platforms to ensure alignment with organizational objectives. The Senior Communications Officer will collaborate with internal teams, stakeholders, and media partners to strengthen the organization’s presence and engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications Leadership:
- Develop and execute integrated communication strategies aligned with AWARD’s goals.
- Oversee communication plans for key projects and provide strategic messaging guidance to senior leadership.
- Lead the production of strategic reports, including Steering Committee updates and donor reports.
- Manage communications consultants and oversee budget allocations and resources.
Content Creation and Management:
- Develop high-quality content such as news articles, blog posts, newsletters, press releases, reports, and audiovisual materials.
- Ensure content is tailored for dissemination across AWARD’s platforms, including websites, social media, and in-person events.
- Coordinate production of quarterly electronic newsletters and maintain subscriber lists.
- Ensure all communication materials comply with branding and marking guidelines.
- Manage content calendars and ensure timely content delivery across platforms.
Media Outreach:
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media agencies, and key outlets.
- Draft press materials, including press releases, statements, and op-eds, and manage media inquiries.
- Track media mentions and engagement metrics.
- Position AWARD as a thought leader by securing media placements and interviews.
Event Management:
- Coordinate the planning and execution of key stakeholder engagement events, including major conferences and observances such as International Women’s Day.
- Produce event-related materials such as concept notes, guest lists, invitation letters, and event reports.
- Represent AWARD at external events as needed.
Digital and Social Media Strategy:
- Develop and implement digital communication strategies, including website updates, email campaigns, and social media engagement.
- Oversee website management, ensuring timely updates and relevant content.
- Track AWARD’s online footprint and media mentions, amplifying relevant content.
- Analyze and report on digital engagement and optimize strategies based on performance metrics.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage communication subscriptions, including design applications, newsletter platforms, and digital tracking tools.
- Maintain an inventory of AWARD’s informational, educational, and communication materials.
Requirements:
- A master’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field, preferably within agricultural research and development or the non-profit sector.
- At least ten years of professional experience in communications, including at least two years in a senior or leadership role.
- Proven track record of developing and executing communications strategies that enhance visibility and engagement.
Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
- Strong experience in strategic communications planning and execution.
- Expertise in content development, media engagement, and digital communications.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional environment with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Terms and Conditions:
- This is a Locally Recruited Staff (LRS) position.
- Competitive remuneration in local currency, based on skills and experience.
- The appointment will be for two years, inclusive of a six-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension based on performance and available resources.
- The duty station will be in Nairobi, Kenya.
