Kituo Cha Sheria is a leading Human Rights and Legal Aid Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in 1973. We are seeking to recruit a dynamic, self-driven and result oriented person to fill in the following position in our organization:-.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER – Ref. KCS/ED/APP 2025

The Executive Director (ED) shall be responsible to the Board of Directors for formulating strategic plans and policy proposals as well as directing and coordinating the general functioning of the organisation. The ED shall also be responsible for implementing action plans as well as reviewing organisational performance against set targets. Other duties include fund raising and negotiating grants, representing the organisation in its dealings with external bodies, Secretary to the Board as well as providing effective leadership to maximise employees’ creativity and commitment.

Minimum Qualifications and Training: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, with relevant training in human rights, organisational result based management or equivalent qualifications. A Masters degree in human rights will be an added advantage.

Relevant Experience: Must have been an Advocate of the High Court for a minimum of seven (7) years. The successful candidate must demonstrate a track record of success in managing a legal and human rights organisation for a minimum of two (2) years; experience of working with a civil society organisation and knowledge of the NGO sector. Candidate must have experience in managing projects and working with community groups and organisations. Experience in donor funding procedures is a critical requirement for this position.

Skills: Must be proactive with strong communication, interpersonal and influential skills. Good working knowledge of modern information, communication and technology systems(tech savvy). Must be a team player and a team leader with demonstrable successes and impacts. Must be in possession of a valid driving license.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Formulating strategic plans and policy proposals that will ensure the achievement of organisational goals and objectives.
  • Planning, directing and coordinating the general functioning of the organisation by ensuring that the strategic plan is implemented in accordance with Board of Director’s directives.
  • Developing fundraising proposals and implementing effective strategies aimed at securing grants and establishing sustainable sources of income.
  • Directing and coordinating the formulation of financial plans and budgets to obtain funding for new and continuing programme activities.
  • Reviewing activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining Kituo’s objectives.
  • Providing effective leadership to drive the implementation of the strategic plan in order to achieve high standards of organisational performance including continuous improvement through efficient processes and effective use of resources.
  • Developing and installing a focused organisational culture based on performance measurement, accountability, transparency and goal achievement to ensure that KITUO is run on sound management principles and practices.
  • Developing strategic collaborative research efforts both locally and internationally, in order to establish a strong network for information and resource sharing
  • Working closely with the Government, Donors, NGO’s and strategic partners to ensure continuing support to KITUO’s policies and long term goals.
  • Developing effective public relations strategy in order to promote KITUO as a leading legal and human rights organisation and to help advance global human rights awareness and rights of citizens to access justice.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the performance of the top management team for compliance with established policies and objectives and their contribution for attaining set objectives.
  • Preparing Board papers, recording minutes and performing all the duties required of Secretary to the Board and all the Board Sub-Committees.
  • Preparing annual reports both narrative and financial and compliance with statutory requirements i.e. the PBO Act, the Advocates Act and other relevant legislation.
