Job Purpose: The Head of Operations is responsible for overseeing the efficient management of the hospital’s support services, including biomedical engineering, facilities management, and Supply Chain. This role will ensure that hospital operations run smoothly, safely, and effectively, supporting clinical and administrative functions in alignment with hospital goals.

The Head of Operations will work closely with senior leadership to develop, implement, and optimize operational processes, ensuring high standards of service, cost efficiency, and compliance with regulations.

1. Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead and manage hospital operations in support services, biomedical engineering, facilities management, and supply chain departments.
  • Develop and implement strategic operational plans to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of these departments.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership to align operational strategies with the hospital’s goals and mission.
  • Provide leadership and direction to department heads, ensuring staff development, motivation, and engagement.
  1. Biomedical Engineering
  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of medical equipment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure that biomedical engineering staff are adequately trained, and that equipment is regularly assessed for performance, safety, and compliance.
  • Develop and manage the equipment lifecycle management process, including budgeting and procurement of new equipment
  1. Facilities Management
  • Ensure the hospital’s physical infrastructure is maintained to the highest standards, providing a safe, clean, and functional environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Oversee building operations including utilities, housekeeping, security, and general maintenance.
  • Implement strategies to improve the hospital’s energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and health and safety standards.
  1. Supply Chain
  • Oversee all aspects of the supply chain and procurement function, including sourcing, purchasing, inventory management, and logistics.
  • Ensure timely, cost-effective, and quality-driven supply chain solutions to support hospital operations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers and vendors, negotiate contracts and ensure compliance with service agreements.
  1. Support Services
  • Oversee the Support Services functions of Security, Catering and Housekeeping to ensure and support seamless service delivery, excellent patient outcomes and business growth. 
  1. Financial Oversight
  • Manage departmental budgets and resources effectively, ensuring cost containment and resource optimization without compromising quality.
  • Analyze operational costs and propose initiatives for reducing expenses while improving service delivery.
  • Provide regular reports on operational performance, budget status, and project outcomes to senior management.
  • Plan for and manage current space, functional requirements and renovation/construction projects.

ii. Qualifications

  1. Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, or related field
  1. Job Experience
  • At least 10 years of experience of which 5 should be at a senior level in hospital operations or healthcare management, with a focus on support services, biomedical engineering, facilities, and supply chain management.
  • Experience working in hospitals with national and international accreditations.

ii. Key Competencies – Skills/ Knowledge/ Aptitude

  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare operations, regulatory requirements, and industry’s best practices.
  • Excellent financial acumen and experience managing operational budgets.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership, staff, and external partners.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple departments and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Able to work under minimum supervision
  • Self-motivated and result orientated
