Role Purpose 

Reporting to the CEO in the interim, the Director, Fixed Business will be responsible for Safaricom Group’s Fixed Business strategic and execution. The role will lead the development and implementation of fixed business strategic initiatives that drive growth and transformation. The role will drive business growth by accelerating the fixed broadband customer base, launch converged value propositions, and extend coverage.  This role will ensure that the fixed business strategies align with the overall Safaricom Group goals and objectives and will play a key role in driving transformational and innovation initiatives and programs.

As a key member of the Safaricom leadership team, the role will lead the fixed business as a value-based organization through better use of resources allocated whilst leveraging the Fixed Business team’ unique skills and knowledge of the business/industry.

Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities and Decision Ownership: 

Strategic Management and Planning 

  • Develop and implement the Fixed Broadband Business strategy direction for the Safaricom Group with changing contextual macro/microenvironment.
  • Lead the Fixed Broadband Business strategic planning process, including conducting industry analysis, identifying growth opportunities, and assessing risks.
  • Oversee the development and execution of the Fixed Broadband Business strategic initiatives, monitoring progress and making necessary adjustments as required.
  • Identify and accelerate fixed business growth opportunities by leveraging new technologies while delivering superior experience through automation and digitization. 
  • Monitor performance metrics to sustain health of the fixed business. 
  • Conduct research and analysis to identify market trends, competitive landscape, and emerging opportunities.
  • Drive end to end business development, acquisition, and large-scale fiber solutions sales: enterprise, home and other property portfolios.
  • Provide guidance and support to the Fixed Broadband team in developing business cases, financial models, and action plans to support strategic initiatives.
  • Enable and offer value propositions that cater to consumer and enterprise customers across micro-segments with segment-based GTM.
  • Leverage AI for micro-segmentation, smart propositions and targeted cross/ up-sell activity. 
  • Identify interdependencies across business unit projects and harmonizes these to create synergy and unity of purpose.

Product and Value Proposition Management 

  • Define the long-term strategy of Fixed Business solutions and create and manage respective product/value proposition road maps and lifecycle management. 
  • Provide technical & thought leadership throughout various stages of fixed business product/value proposition lifecycle – planning, design, specification, implementation and launch. 
  • Recommend the nature and scope of present and future fixed business solutions by reviewing product specifications and requirements, appraising new product ideas and/or product changes. 
  • Work with commercial teams to develop fixed business pricing strategies and product policies. 
  • Build relationships with, onboard and manage partnerships required for the execution of fixed business solutions. 

Operational Excellence

  • Lead and oversee the development and implementation of Fixed Business operation and maintenance standards, procedures and guidelines.
  • Champion and oversight operations and maintenance of Fixed Business Network Operations to ensure constant availability. 
  • Ensure that operational processes and customer journeys are simplified, automated and implemented as designed enable seamless digital (DIY) onboarding and support processes, reducing issue resolution times. 
  • Recommend tools and resources developments to improve operational excellence and quality standards of Fixed business operations and meet Safaricom quality objectives synergized with the Technology Assurance and Performance Management team.
  • Champion capability development and training efforts that enable achievement of fixed business transformation initiatives/programs/project outcomes. 
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, driving the fixed business growth and competitiveness.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive fixed business transformational changes, ensuring efficient and effective implementation.

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Lead a team of Fixed business professionals, including developers, analysts, and subject matter experts, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture. 
  • Set clear objectives, provide guidance, and support the fixed business team members in achieving their goals.
  • Role model inclusivity & builds trust for a psychologically safe environment for everyone to be their best. 
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the team.
  • Support functional leaders in creating and sustaining a cultural environment for the function shaped by the Safaricom way of leadership.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the Safaricom Group ecosystem. 
  • Collaborate with other clusters, tribes, teams, and departments to foster a holistic and integrated approach to Safaricom’s Strategy and Transformation engagements.
  • Communicate effectively to convey the Group/company/cluster/CoE/tribe vision, progress, and achievements.

Qualifications

  • At least ten (10) years’ knowledge and experience in the relevant field. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field along with technical qualifications, or equivalent qualification(s) from a recognized institution of higher learning. 
  • MBA or relevant Master’s degree is an added advantage. 
  • Member in good standing of a recognized professional body. 
  • Superior business understanding, with the ability to leverage technology to solve business and technical issues.
  • Strong experience in leading and delivering Fixed Business programs and Innovation agenda.
  • Experience with fixed business feasibility planning and business modelling.
  • Existing relationships with fixed business active equipment (GPON, etc.) suppliers.
