1. Legal Officer

Role Overview:

As a Legal Officer at Gulf African Bank, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding the bank’s legal interests. Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Transaction Documentation Review: Assist in reviewing and advising on transaction documentation to identify potential legal risks and provide appropriate advice to management and line managers, ensuring the bank is protected from potential loss.
  • Legal Records Management: Maintain and update legal records and documents systematically to ensure easy retrieval and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Litigation Support: Review documentation related to court matters involving the bank, providing necessary support to ensure favorable outcomes.
  • Additional Duties: Undertake any other tasks assigned by management to support the bank’s legal functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory: Provide timely and accurate legal advice to various departments, ensuring all bank operations comply with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential legal risks in proposed transactions and existing operations, recommending mitigation strategies to management.
  • Policy Development: Assist in the development and review of internal policies to ensure they are in line with current legislation and best practices.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated on relevant laws and regulations, ensuring the bank’s compliance and advising on necessary actions or changes.
  • Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements on behalf of the bank, ensuring all legal and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Dispute Resolution: Manage and resolve disputes involving the bank, representing its interests in negotiations and legal proceedings.
  • Training and Development: Conduct training sessions for staff on legal topics, enhancing the organization’s overall legal awareness and compliance culture.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized institution.
  • Admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably within the banking or financial sector.
  • Strong understanding of banking laws and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
