ICT OFFICER – DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) is a faith-based health solutions provider founded by an ecumenical partnership between the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and the Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK). Since 1986, MEDS has been dedicated to providing reliable and affordable Health Products and Technologies, Quality Assurance, and Health Systems Strengthening Services to clients across Kenya, Africa, and beyond.

To strengthen our ICT team, we are seeking a skilled and experienced ICT Officer – Database Administrator who will be responsible for managing and maintaining the organization’s databases to ensure performance, security, and availability. This position reports to the ICT Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement database schemas, including tables, indexes, relationships, and constraints based on application requirements.
  • Develop and maintain data models and database architecture to support business processes and applications.
  • Install, configure, and optimize Database Management Systems (DBMS) and related tools, setting up parameters to enhance operational performance.
  • Analyze and improve SQL queries and database performance through indexing, query rewriting, and monitoring tools.
  • Develop and implement backup strategies to ensure data integrity and manage recovery procedures in case of corruption, loss, or disasters.
  • Implement and manage access controls, including user roles and permissions, to secure sensitive data against unauthorized access.
  • Plan and execute data migration tasks, including transferring data between databases, systems, or environments, ensuring seamless data integration.
  • Conduct regular database maintenance, including applying patches, performing health checks, and managing space usage.
  • Troubleshoot database-related issues, including performance bottlenecks, connectivity problems, and data corruption.
  • Provide support to application developers and end-users for database-related queries and problems.
  • Monitor database resource usage and forecast future capacity needs, implementing strategies to ensure optimal performance.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database schemas, configurations, procedures, and changes.
  • Ensure database compliance with industry regulations and best practices, including GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS standards.
  • Develop and implement automation tools for database management tasks such as backups, monitoring, and maintenance using scripting languages.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans, regularly testing and updating them to ensure quick recovery in case of failure.
  • Collaborate with application developers, system administrators, and IT teams to support application development and deployment.
  • Coordinate with database vendors for support, updates, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior database administrators and IT staff on database management practices and tools.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, ICT, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification in database administration, such as Microsoft Certified, Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Database Administrator, MySQL Database Administrator, or Certified Data Management Professional.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in database administration, hardware and software maintenance, and user support.
