1. Laboratory Technologist

Reports To: Laboratory Manager

Job Purpose:
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing a range of routine and complex laboratory procedures—including hematological, biochemical, serological, molecular, and other diagnostic tests as outlined by the KMLTTB Act. The results produced by the Laboratory Technologist are crucial for medical practitioners to accurately diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technical Procedures:
    • Execute a variety of laboratory tests and procedures, covering both routine and complex analyses in hematology, chemistry, serology, molecular biology, and other areas.
  • Record Keeping:
    • Ensure the precise and timely completion of laboratory records and reports, maintaining data integrity at all times.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration:
    • Liaise with pathologists, doctors, managers, heads of departments, and section leaders on technical matters. Provide relevant data essential for disease prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.
  • Adherence to Protocols:
    • Follow laboratory policies meticulously regarding data retrieval, record maintenance, specimen handling, identification, and reporting procedures.
  • Customer Care:

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science from a recognized institution.

  • Training on ISO 15189 implementation or experience in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory will be considered an asset.

2. Medical Officer

Reports To: Medical Officer In-Charge

Job Purpose:
The Medical Officer plays a pivotal role in ensuring that patients in the Outpatient Department receive prompt and effective consultations and procedures. This role also involves stabilizing emergencies in the Accident & Emergency (A&E) and Inpatient Departments, as well as coordinating with consultants for the comprehensive management of patient care.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Emergency Response:
    • Respond promptly to emergencies in the A&E and Outpatient Departments, ensuring rapid and effective intervention.
  • Patient Care:
    • Provide medical attention to patients in the Inpatient Department in collaboration with consultants.
    • Manage direct admissions and conduct necessary admissions when the situation demands.
  • Clinical Audits:
    • Actively participate in mortality and morbidity audits, contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment:
    • Deliver accurate diagnosis and effective management of patients according to established protocols.
  • Community Outreach:
    • Engage in health talks and outreach programs aimed at improving public health awareness.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in regular training sessions, including weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery.
  • Registration with The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  • A valid practicing license from The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  • Active BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certificates.

Reports To: Theatre In-Charge

Job Purpose:
The Perioperative Nurse is charged with delivering high standards of perioperative care in alignment with the hospital’s policies and procedures. This role is fundamental in ensuring safe surgical outcomes and achieving patient safety goals through comprehensive care before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preoperative Care:
    • Conduct thorough assessments of patient needs and prepare patients for surgery.
    • Verify that all necessary documents and consents are in order prior to surgery.
  • Intraoperative Support:
    • Assist surgeons in the operating room by efficiently handling equipment and surgical instruments.
    • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and ensure that a sterile environment is consistently maintained throughout the procedure.
  • Medication Administration & Patient Support:
    • Administer medication as prescribed, manage patient anxiety, and provide emotional support to both patients and their families.
  • Vital Signs Monitoring:
    • Monitor patient vitals during surgery, assist with the administration of anesthesia, and manage surgical equipment and supplies.
  • Postoperative Care:
    • Deliver post-operative care by monitoring vital signs, managing pain, and providing incision site and wound care.
    • Educate patients and their families on health management and recovery processes.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Ensure accurate documentation of all procedures, maintain confidentiality, and facilitate smooth shift handovers.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other perioperative staff, to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Emergency Management:
    • Assist anesthetists during the induction and reversal of anesthesia and implement emergency procedures, including resuscitation, when necessary.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Community Health Nursing.
  • Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing.
  • A minimum of two years’ working experience as a nurse, with at least one year of specialized experience as a Perioperative Nurse.
  • A valid BLS and ACLS certification.
  • A current Nursing Council license.

  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Engage with doctors and other healthcare providers daily to discuss patient care plans, ensuring a unified, team-based approach to treatment.
    • Relay accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions to clinical staff.
  • Treatment Administration:
    • Administer prescribed treatment plans with precision and care, ensuring adherence to established protocols.
  • Specimen Handling:
    • Label and dispatch specimens to the laboratory promptly and safely, ensuring the integrity of each sample.
  • Ward Management:
    • Oversee routine duties within the unit to prepare and clear the ward before admissions and after patient discharges.
  • Patient and Family Education:
    • Provide essential health education to patients and arrange for appropriate follow-up care.
  • Complaint and Emergency Management:
    • Address patient complaints and respond to emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
  • Orientation and Mentorship:
    • Orient new patients to the unit and supervise the activities within the department during your assigned shift.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (KRCCN).
  • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing. (A degree in Nursing is considered an added advantage.)
  • A minimum of one year’s work experience in a critical care unit post-KRCCN training and licensure, in addition to at least two years’ experience as a general nurse.
  • Valid BLS/ACLS certification.
