PhD Position – Cervical Cancer Management in Kenya
Advert Ref: AD/1/14/25
The University of Nairobi’s KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) is seeking applications for a PhD Position focused on Cervical Cancer Management in Kenya. This project aims to investigate the care-seeking experiences of women diagnosed with cervical cancer, with an emphasis on radiotherapy treatment outcomes. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team across various institutions to generate evidence that informs policy recommendations for improving cancer care.
About the Project
Cervical cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Kenya, with an estimated 3,210 deaths in 2020. Many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages (Stage IIB to IVA), where radiotherapy is the primary treatment option. However, poor patient outcomes indicate systemic weaknesses in radiotherapy service delivery.
To address this, the University of Nairobi, in collaboration with the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP), Hasselt University, University of Antwerp, Ghent University, and University Hospital Leuven, is conducting a VLIR-UOS funded study. This research project will audit the process and outcome of radiotherapy treatment in Kenya, providing actionable insights to enhance patient care and treatment success.
The PhD student will contribute to the qualitative research aspect of the study, working closely with all project partners and under the supervision of the social science thematic lead. This is a full-time, two-year position, and only female candidates will be considered due to the nature of the research.
