Masters Studentship – Kisumu & Kericho
Key Responsibilities
As a Masters Studentship researcher, you will be engaged in various scientific and research activities, contributing to the advancement of pathogen detection and antimicrobial resistance studies. Your key responsibilities will include:
1. Conducting Fieldwork for Data Collection
- Performing field surveys and data collection activities.
- Collecting biological and environmental samples for laboratory analysis.
- Ensuring proper documentation and storage of collected data.
- Complying with ethical guidelines and research protocols while handling samples.
- Engaging with local communities to facilitate data collection efforts.
2. Performing Laboratory Experiments
- Conducting laboratory-based microbial culture techniques.
- Processing and preparing biological samples for genomic analysis.
- Refining Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) protocols for efficient pathogen detection.
- Carrying out experimental trials to optimize laboratory workflows.
- Ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) in laboratory experiments.
3. Utilizing ONT Sequencing and Bioinformatics Tools
- Preparing sequencing libraries for whole genome sequencing (WGS).
- Running sequencing experiments using ONT platforms.
- Conducting bioinformatics analyses for genomic data interpretation.
- Identifying and characterizing disease pathogens through genomic sequencing.
- Detecting antimicrobial resistance genes using advanced computational methods.
- Managing and curating large-scale sequencing datasets.
4. Collaborating with Stakeholders
- Engaging with healthcare professionals, research institutions, and government agencies.
- Collaborating with local and international researchers on project activities.
- Providing data and insights to inform public health decision-making.
- Participating in stakeholder meetings and knowledge-sharing sessions.
5. Engaging in Training and Capacity Building
- Attending workshops and training programs to enhance research skills.
- Developing technical expertise in genomics and bioinformatics applications.
- Contributing to knowledge-sharing initiatives within the research team.
- Assisting in training junior researchers and students.
Vacancy Requirements

- Education:
- Must hold a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Genomics, or any related biological science course from a recognized institution.
