The University of Nairobi, in collaboration with the National Cancer Control Program, Hasselt University, University of Antwerp, Ghent University, and University Hospital Leuven, is inviting applications for a PhD position as part of a VLIR-UOS funded study on cervical cancer management in Kenya. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to critical research that aims to improve treatment outcomes for women battling cervical cancer.
About the Project
Cervical cancer (CC) remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Kenya, with an estimated 3,210 fatalities in 2020 alone. Many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage (Stage IIB to IVA), where radiotherapy is the primary treatment option. However, due to various systemic challenges, patient outcomes remain poor.
This study seeks to analyze radiotherapy treatment processes through a clinical audit to understand systemic weaknesses in service delivery and how they impact patient outcomes. By generating evidence-based recommendations, the project aims to enhance the quality of care and overall patient survival rates.
This research project incorporates both qualitative and quantitative approaches and will be conducted in close collaboration with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) under the Ministry of Health. The project team is looking to bring on board a dedicated PhD student to support the qualitative aspects of this research.

Role Overview
The University of Nairobi’s KAVI-ICR is seeking one (1) female candidate for a PhD position focusing on investigating the care-seeking experiences of women diagnosed with cervical cancer. The selected candidate will play a key role in the qualitative aspects of the research, focusing on patient experiences, service delivery, and treatment challenges.
The successful applicant will receive a reasonable subsistence allowance, and all research-related expenses will be covered. Due to the sensitive nature of the research, this opportunity is exclusively available to female candidates.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The PhD student will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Conducting an extensive literature review related to cervical cancer treatment and patient experiences in Kenya.
- Designing and executing a qualitative study focusing on the treatment experiences of cervical cancer patients.
- Collecting data using ethnographic research methods, including:
- In-depth interviews
- Focus group discussions
- Non-participant observations
- Managing and analyzing qualitative data to generate meaningful insights.
- Completing a PhD thesis based on the research findings within the project timeline.
- Publishing at least two peer-reviewed research articles from the study findings.
- Actively participating in project-related activities and collaborating with project partners.
Desired Candidate Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and committed PhD student who possesses the following attributes:
- A background in anthropology, sociology, or gender studies.
- Must have completed coursework and be ready to embark on research.
- Strong qualitative research skills and experience with ethnographic research methods.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A deep interest in public health research, specifically in cancer treatment and patient care experiences.
