Partners for Health and Development in Africa (PHDA) is a Kenyan non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the University of Manitoba (UoM), Canada. PHDA works to improve healthcare access for disadvantaged communities across Africa through system strengthening, research, program development, and strategic partnerships.

The Research Project

This research project, following a Program Science approach, seeks to understand how physical, organizational, social, and relational dimensions of place influence the ecologies of risk and safety for adolescent girls and young women (15-24 years), female sex workers, and their male sexual partners in Nairobi County. The study aims to generate evidence that will inform place-based strategies for HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) programming, optimizing program coverage and addressing unmet needs among the study populations.

About the Position

PHDA is seeking a Research Coordinator – Quantitative to lead and oversee the implementation of this critical research project. The ideal candidate is a self-driven professional with extensive experience in managing quantitative research projects and a strong passion for contributing to a growing organization that provides opportunities for career advancement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the overall research project, including the development of work plans, research team management, timely implementation, and reporting.
  • Conceptualize, design, and implement quantitative research in collaboration with the local research team and the UoM research team.
  • Conduct literature reviews to contextualize the research goals and objectives.
  • Develop study tools, research protocols, and ethical approval documents for quantitative data collection.
  • Train quantitative researchers, including community researchers, in quantitative data collection, analysis, and interpretation methods.
  • Manage the quantitative research team, overseeing the data collection process, ensuring quality control, and troubleshooting challenges as necessary.
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data while making critical observations in collaboration with community researchers, PHDA, and UoM research teams.
  • Organize and conduct regular community meetings and workshops to share findings and interpret results.
  • Conduct regular meetings with co-investigators to discuss project progress and share findings as they become available.
  • Develop and deliver professional presentations on research findings.
  • Prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Conduct community consultations to develop data collection processes and validate findings.
  • Translate research findings into programmatic recommendations to refine intervention strategies.
  • Support the research team in developing new research proposals.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Skills and Competencies

  • Postgraduate degree in Statistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 7–10 years of experience in conducting quantitative research.
  • Strong knowledge of various quantitative research methods and study designs.
  • Experience in field-based quantitative data collection and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, R, or SAS.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, including statistical analysis and data interpretation.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience managing research teams, including community researchers.
  • Experience conducting quantitative research with key populations, adolescent girls, young women, and men is an added advantage.
  • Research experience embedded within a health program is an added advantage.
  • Prior experience working with global research teams is an added advantage.

This role requires an individual with high integrity, strong interpersonal communication skills, multitasking abilities, a results-oriented mindset, and proactive problem-solving skills in research management.
