About the Internship

The purpose of the internship program is to enhance knowledge and interest in the work of the Norwegian Foreign Service. As an intern, you will gain comprehensive insight into the embassy’s responsibilities and several aspects of Norway’s cooperation with the UN (UNEP and UN-Habitat), Kenya, and Somalia. The role will involve political and economic reporting, information and communication work, aid management, multilateral engagement, business promotion, facilitation of visits and events, as well as administrative and consular duties.

Nairobi is one of the key UN capitals, hosting several UN and multilateral organizations. Norway has extensive collaboration with the UN, Kenya, and Somalia. The intern will play an integral role in enhancing internal and external communication regarding these partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will support the Norwegian Embassy across multiple areas, including:

  • Political and economic analysis, including drafting reports on developments in Kenya and Somalia.
  • Assistance in information and communication tasks, including maintaining the Embassy’s social media presence.
  • Support in aid management and development cooperation initiatives.
  • Participation in Norway’s engagement with multilateral organizations based in Nairobi, including UNEP and UN-Habitat.
  • Support in organizing and facilitating visits and events hosted by the Embassy.
  • Engagement in business promotion efforts and partnerships between Norway and Kenya.
  • Administrative and consular support as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet the requirements for student interns as outlined on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website and agree to the conditions mentioned therein.

Candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Enrollment in higher education in social sciences, economics, or law.
  • A strong academic background and a demonstrated interest in foreign policy.
  • Knowledge of Kenyan and/or Somali politics, culture, and society is an advantage.
  • Prior experience or an interest in development cooperation and aid programs is beneficial.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Experience with social media management and online publishing is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Stipend and Practical Information

  • The internship lasts for six months, beginning on Monday, August 4, 2025.
  • The internship program is unpaid; however, the intern will receive a stipend of NOK 15,500 per month.
  • The stipend can be combined with financial support from the Norwegian Loan Fund.
  • The intern is responsible for covering travel and living expenses, as well as securing accommodation in Nairobi.
  • Please note that changes in travel advisories for Kenya may lead to the cancellation of the internship offer. The Embassy will not be liable for any expenses incurred before the internship commencement.
