The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution dedicated to generating evidence, strengthening research capacity, and influencing policy on health and development across Africa. With its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Dakar, Senegal, APHRC is an Africa-based and African-led organization that seeks to drive transformative change.

Through its Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division, APHRC runs a demand-driven research internship program designed to nurture talented young African researchers. This program offers an opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience in diverse research areas.

For 2025, the RRCS Division has opened internship opportunities across various research projects, spanning a 3-6 month period starting in April 2025. Details about each project can be found in the attached PDF document.

Available Internship Positions

APHRC is offering internship opportunities across 40 research projects covering various themes, including health, education, data science, gender studies, climate change, and technology. Below are the projects available for internships:

Health and Well-being Projects

  • Project 1: Evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of a gender transformative parenting intervention in Kakamega County.
  • Project 2: Understanding the relationship between child stimulation and brain function using neuroimaging techniques and behavioral measures.
  • Project 5 & 6: Kenya National Survey on Gender Norms and Attitudes, Health and Well-being among Very Young Adolescents.
  • Project 23: Achieving cervical cancer control through HPV vaccination (ACCHV).

Education and Child Development

  • Project 3: Development of a centralized ECD data visualization system in Nairobi, Homa Bay, and Isiolo Counties.
  • Project 4: Teacher Professional Development (TPD) practicum and Sex Education Pipeline.
  • Project 19: EYE in Higher Education, including Pedagogies of Inclusion and Inclusive Education.
  • Project 29 & 30: Urban Education and Foundational Learning in Kenya.
  • Project 33: Optimizing inclusive early learning and school readiness for children with developmental disabilities in Kenya.

Gender and Social Development

  • Project 20: Lived experiences of abortion in Benin and Togo.
  • Project 21: Nisaidie, usinidhuru! – Improving post-rape and post-abortion care in Kilifi County.
  • Project 25: Evaluation of The Girls Generation-African Led Movement on Ending FGM/C.
  • Project 38: Gender and Education Focus Area: Gender and Education Program.

Data Science, Technology, and ICT

  • Project 12: Gates’ Virtual Academy (ICT) – Good Financial Grant Practice.
  • Project 13: Data Science Without Borders/DASSA.
  • Project 14: Agent-Based Modelling (ABM).
  • Project 35: Information and Computer Technology (ICT).
  • Project 37: Software Development (Operations).

Policy and Capacity Strengthening

  • Project 9: African Research Excellence Fund (AREF) Fellowship Program.
  • Project 10: WHO HRP Alliance Hub.
  • Project 24: Consortium for Advanced Research Training Catalyze project: African Journals Visibility Platform.
  • Project 32: Public Engagement Infrastructure Strengthening (PEIS) Project.

Environmental and Climate Change Research

  • Project 31: Visibilizing climate change impacts on nutrition and mental health in East African drylands.
  • Project 34: AfriFOODlinks.

Administrative and General Support Roles

  • Project 7: General Administration (Legal and Compliance).
  • Project 16: Program Assistant Intern (General) – Data Science Program.
  • Project 26: MEL Portal, Data Quality Assurance, and Knowledge Management.
  • Project 36: General Support (People and Culture – formerly Human Resources).

Responsibilities

Interns will be expected to:

  • Work with an assigned supervisor to develop objectives and a work plan for the internship.
  • Provide regular project updates and reports.
  • Contribute to policy engagement and strategic planning where required.
  • Make at least one Brown Bag Presentation (BBP) about their work at APHRC.
  • Submit a written report at least one week before the end of the internship.
  • Complete an internship/visiting scholar feedback form.
  • Participate in a follow-up evaluation survey after the internship.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have completed a bachelor’s degree and/or be pursuing/completed a master’s degree in population studies, demography, statistics, epidemiology, economics, social sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills are desired.
  • Open to nationals of African countries.
  • The internship is hybrid, and interns must be available for in-person activities when required.
