Applicants for the Position of Chairperson and Members of the Kakamega County Public Service Board

Introduction

The Kakamega County Government, through the Office of the Governor and the Selection Panel for the Appointment of the County Public Service Board members, announced vacancies for the positions of Chairperson (one post) and Members (three posts) of the County Public Service Board. These vacancies were advertised in print media and on the county’s official website, in accordance with Section 57 and 58 of the County Governments Act, 2012, and Section 5 of the Kakamega County Public Service Board Act, No. 7 of 2017.

By the close of the application period on February 26, 2025, a total of twenty-five (25) candidates had applied for the position of Chairperson, while one hundred and eleven (111) candidates had expressed interest in the three available positions for Board Members.

Application Process and Qualifications

The advertisement sought individuals with outstanding leadership, integrity, and expertise in areas relevant to public service management. The applicants came from diverse professional backgrounds, with academic qualifications ranging from Bachelor’s degrees to PhDs in various fields, including Public Administration, Law, Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Finance, Engineering, and Education.

Applicants for the Position of Chairperson

The position of Chairperson attracted 25 candidates with diverse qualifications, including:

  • PhDs in Public Administration, Business Management, and Human Resource Management
  • Master’s Degrees in Public Policy, Education, and Strategic Management
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Public Secretary (CPS), and Chartered Human Resource Professional (CHRP)

Some of the applicants have held high-ranking positions in government agencies, academia, and corporate institutions, reflecting their experience and capacity to steer the county’s human resource agenda.

Applicants for the Position of Board Members

For the three (3) available Board Member positions, 111 individuals submitted applications. The applicants held qualifications in fields such as:

  • Law (LLB, PGDL)
  • Education (B.Ed, M.Ed, PhD in Education Management and Planning)
  • Business (B.Com, MBA, MSc. Finance)
  • Public Administration (Master’s and PhD in Public Policy, Governance, and Administration)
  • Engineering, Medical Sciences, and Information Technology

The large pool of applicants highlights the high level of interest in public service positions and the strong qualifications of professionals in Kakamega County.

Next Steps in the Recruitment Process

The Selection Panel will now undertake the process of reviewing the applications to shortlist candidates for interviews. The criteria for selection will include:

  • Academic qualifications and professional certifications
  • Work experience and leadership capabilities
  • Adherence to integrity and ethical standards in public service

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews, after which the panel will make recommendations to the appointing authority.

The appointment of the Chairperson and Members of the Kakamega County Public Service Board is a crucial step toward strengthening public service management in the county.
