UNDERWRITING MANAGER – GENERAL INSURANCE BUSINESS
Madison General Insurance Kenya Limited, a subsidiary of Madison Group and a leading provider of general insurance products throughout Kenya, is recruiting for the above position.
Overall Responsibility:
The Underwriting Manager will be responsible for managing the day to day underwriting and reinsurance processes, provide leadership to the organization’s underwriting and reinsurance functions as well as contribute to the development and implementation of organization strategies, policies and standard operating procedures. Carry out any other duties allocated by the Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Underwriting function and reinsurance functions in Madison General insurance Kenya Ltd.
- Ensure transactions are monitored and posted in the system to ensure proper processing of underwriting transactions within the agreed timelines.
- Ensure policy documents are consistently issued to the insureds.
- Coordinate with underwriters and Registry to ensure proper creation and dispatch of underwriting files to the registry.
- Monitor production to ensure business is accepted, debited and authorized within agreed timelines TAT.
- Ensure business is accepted at the correct price and appropriate terms and conditions for profitability.
- Supervise the renewal process to ensure retention of profitable business.
- Training of staff and intermediaries on products, and new process procedures.
- Participate in business development activities as required.
- Ensure quotation are done in line with reinsurance guidelines and company guidelines.
- Continuous coaching of the team for improved performance.
- Oversee the Reinsurance function in Madison General to efficiently and effectively manage all the Reinsurance aspects of the GB Business including Healthcare to ensure satisfactory underwriting standards are achieved as per best Reinsurance practice.
- Ensure the treaties are filed before the deadline and secure approved terms by IRA.
- Identify areas that require improvement and streamline business process procedures to align to the changing business environment.
- Circulate the consequent year new rates for all the risks undertaken by the company by 15th December to all the marketers, underwriters and intermediaries.
- Participate in recruitment by conducting interviews.
- Conduct orientation and training of new staff.
- Work with underwriters in setting KPIs and review their performance and make recommendations necessary to enhance performance.
- Participate in company strategy formulation and implementation.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports as required.
- Any other assignment as may be allocated from time to time.
Experience and Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of the non-motor and motor underwriting processes.
- Expertise in negotiation of reinsurance treaties and placement of risks.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Written and oral communication.
- Negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen and strong understanding of business requirements.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Computer literate i.e. Microsoft Office & Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
Academic and Professional Qualifications required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business management or related field.
- ACII Diploma or Diploma in Insurance.
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration is an added advantage.
- 5 years working experience in underwriting manager position in the insurance company in Kenya.
