Job Title: Underwriting Associate – Nairobi

Reports to: Branch Manager

Job Purpose:

The Underwriting Associate will be responsible for vetting business proposals and ensuring only quality business is booked. The role also involves processing renewals, managing certificates, and maintaining accurate underwriting records.


Key Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

1. Revenue Generation

  • Ensure all quotations and tenders received are completed and approved by the Branch Manager.
  • Cross-sell and promptly generate quotations to enable the branch to meet its business targets.
  • Process daily debiting of all business received in the office.

2. Cash Collection & Liquidity Management

  • Ensure all accounts on payment plans adhere to the approved credit days.
  • Ensure compliance with the company’s credit policy guideline of 40:30:30.
  • Monitor and enforce timely payments within agreed credit terms.

3. Loss Ratio Management

  • Collect and file documentation for new clients and businesses per the underwriting guidelines.
  • Ensure business booked meets company vetting and rating standards.
  • Submit a daily claims report and validation to the claims department by the end of each working day.

4. Management Expense & Cost Efficiency

  • Ensure underwriting operations align with the branch budget.
  • Monitor and control branch-related expenses within the allocated budget.

5. Internal Controls and Reporting

  • Vet all debits to ensure they are accompanied by relevant documents and premiums are received within the required payment period.
  • Enforce compliance with internal audit controls and other management-recommended processes.

6. Talent Management and Development

  • Ensure the branch conducts training on at least three non-motor products every quarter to enhance technical competence and drive business growth.
  • Facilitate system training to reduce errors and improve efficiency.
  • Develop and implement staff development plans at the beginning of each year.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • Pass in at least three (3) papers in ACII/AIIK or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant experience in underwriting.
