The Role
The Carbon Engagement Officer will serve as the main link between the One Mara Carbon Project and various stakeholders, including local communities, conservancy management, tourism operators, and research organizations. The officer will be responsible for coordinating community engagement activities to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
Key Responsibilities
1. Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Act as the primary liaison between the project team and key stakeholders within the Mara landscape.
- Maintain strong relationships and effective communication with communities, conservancy management, tourism operators, and research organizations.
- Lead awareness and education campaigns on the One Mara Carbon Project, ensuring that stakeholders understand carbon financing and their roles in its success.
- Develop and distribute Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to enhance stakeholder knowledge.
- Ensure transparent information flow between all stakeholders through strategic communications.
2. Community Mobilization & Participation
- Engage with community members, local leaders, and groups to build trust, support, and promote the project’s goals.
- Facilitate community consultations, meetings, and workshops to ensure inclusivity in planning and decision-making.
- Address concerns from community members and ensure meaningful participation in project activities.
- Promote local capacity-building and training programs, encouraging community participation in carbon monitoring, restoration, and management efforts.
3. Compliance & Ethical Standards
- Ensure free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) standards are established and maintained for all One Mara Carbon Project activities.
- Monitor compliance with community engagement and conservation standards.
- Assist in obtaining necessary permissions for community-related activities.
4. Conflict Resolution & Problem-Solving
- Act as the knowledge custodian on carbon financing within MMWCA and provide insights to stakeholders.
- Support conflict resolution efforts to address any issues arising during project implementation.
- Synthesize feedback from community engagements into improved strategies for the project.
5. Project Coordination & Reporting
- Maintain a stakeholder map to ensure efficient information flow between all relevant parties.
- Support the Senior Programmes Officer – Governance in implementing the One Mara Carbon Project communication strategy.
- Coordinate exposure visits and reciprocal knowledge exchanges with other landscapes implementing carbon-financing initiatives.
- Assist in generating donor reports and ensuring timely submission in compliance with institutional and donor requirements.
- Prepare and present progress reports, project briefs, and updates to relevant stakeholders.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum five (5) years of experience working with communities and conservancies in the Maasai Mara ecosystem.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and report-writing skills.
- Fluency in Maa is highly desirable.
