1. Overview of the Position
Support Staff play a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness, orderliness, and proper maintenance of public spaces, facilities, and working environments. Their responsibilities include street cleaning, garbage collection, gatekeeping at designated dumpsites, drain cleaning, and general maintenance of sanitation facilities. This position is vital in maintaining hygienic conditions that contribute to public health, safety, and environmental sustainability.
The selected candidates will work under the supervision of their assigned supervisors and will be expected to perform their duties with diligence, efficiency, and a strong commitment to cleanliness and environmental care. The role may involve physical work in various weather conditions, requiring resilience and dedication.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Support Staff will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
2.1 Cleaning and Maintenance of Streets
- Ensuring public roads, walkways, and streets are kept clean and free from litter.
- Sweeping and removing debris from streets and public spaces to maintain cleanliness.
- Emptying waste bins and ensuring proper disposal of collected garbage.
- Reporting any areas that require special attention, such as areas with excessive littering.
2.2 Collection and Disposal of Refuse
- Collecting garbage and waste materials from designated collection points.
- Loading refuse into garbage trucks for proper disposal.
- Assisting in sorting recyclable materials when necessary.
- Ensuring that refuse collection areas remain tidy and hygienic.
2.3 Gatekeeping and Security at Designated Dumpsites
- Manning entry and exit points at designated dumpsites.
- Monitoring and controlling the movement of people and vehicles at dumpsites.
- Ensuring unauthorized persons do not access restricted waste disposal areas.
- Keeping a log of incoming and outgoing refuse loads.
- Reporting any suspicious activities or unauthorized dumping to relevant authorities.
2.4 Cleaning and Maintenance of Drainage Systems
- Regularly cleaning drainage channels to prevent blockages and flooding.
- Removing debris, silt, and vegetation from drainage systems.
- Reporting any damaged or dysfunctional drainage systems that require repair.
- Assisting in emergency clean-up efforts in case of flooding or drainage overflow.
2.5 Clearing Bushes and Overgrown Vegetation
- Cutting and clearing bushes along roadsides, walkways, and public spaces.
- Ensuring that overgrown vegetation does not obstruct traffic, pathways, or drainage systems.
- Disposing of cut vegetation in an environmentally friendly manner.
- Working with environmental officers to identify areas that require regular clearing.
2.6 Cleaning and Maintenance of Sanitary Facilities
- Ensuring that public toilets, washrooms, and sanitary facilities are kept clean at all times.
- Disinfecting and restocking sanitary facilities with essential items such as soap and tissue.
- Reporting any broken or malfunctioning sanitary equipment.
- Ensuring proper disposal of waste in public sanitation facilities.
2.7 Cleaning and Maintenance of Tools and Equipment
- Cleaning and properly storing work tools and equipment after use.
- Reporting any damaged tools that require repair or replacement.
- Ensuring that cleaning equipment such as brooms, dustpans, and garbage bins are in good condition.
- Using work tools and protective gear appropriately to avoid accidents and injuries.
2.8 Performing Other Assigned Duties
- Assisting in emergency clean-up operations, including during natural disasters or major public events.
- Supporting other departments in duties that require additional manpower.
- Any other related duties assigned by the supervisor to support public cleanliness and hygiene.
3. Requirements for Appointment
To be considered for appointment to this grade, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
3.1 Citizenship
- Must be a Kenyan citizen. (Attach a copy of the National Identity Card.)
3.2 Educational Qualifications
- Must have a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
- Must have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum mean grade of D plain.
3.3 Medical Fitness
- Must provide a valid medical certificate from a registered and licensed medical doctor from a government hospital.
- The medical certificate should confirm physical fitness to undertake manual tasks required for the role.
3.4 Other Requirements
- Must be physically fit and able to perform manual tasks that may require lifting, bending, and prolonged standing.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions, including hot, cold, and rainy environments.
- Must possess good communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
- Prior experience in cleaning, waste management, or related duties will be an added advantage.
- Should be responsible, reliable, and committed to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Should be willing to work on weekends and public holidays when required.

5. Terms of Employment
- This position is a full-time role with duties performed as assigned by the respective supervisors.
- The selected candidates may be required to work in shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
- Remuneration will be provided as per the government pay scale for Job Group C.
- Employees must adhere to workplace safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear during duty hours.
- Performance will be regularly assessed to ensure efficiency and adherence to cleanliness standards.
