The Institute for Human Development (IHD) at AKU is a multidisciplinary research institute focused on promoting a comprehensive understanding of early human development. Job Title: Field Enumerators (Short-Term Assignment)
Project Overview
As part of its continued commitment to driving impactful research in early human development, the Aga Khan University – Institute for Human Development is currently undertaking a study that seeks to collect vital qualitative and quantitative data from selected populations. The project aims to gain deeper insights into human development, behavior, and community dynamics, which will ultimately inform the design of programs and policies that enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.
To ensure the success of this study, AKU is seeking to hire qualified and motivated Field Enumerators who will play a critical role in the execution of data collection activities. These individuals will work closely with the Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator to ensure the quality and integrity of data collected.
Key Responsibilities
The selected Field Enumerators will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to:
1. Data Collection and Management
- Administer structured and semi-structured questionnaires to study participants using both paper-based and electronic tools.
- Conduct in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) to gather qualitative insights.
- Ensure accurate recording of responses and meticulous documentation of all data.
- Transcribe qualitative interviews and discussions promptly and accurately.
2. Participant Engagement and Mobilization
- Assist in identifying and recruiting eligible study participants from target communities.
- Facilitate outreach and mobilization activities to ensure high participation rates.
- Clearly explain the study objectives, processes, and participant rights.
- Obtain informed consent from all participants before conducting interviews or discussions.
3. Tool Development and Pretesting
- Actively participate in reviewing and pretesting of data collection tools.
- Provide feedback on tool clarity, cultural appropriateness, and functionality.
4. Community Engagement
- Support community engagement initiatives aimed at building trust and rapport with stakeholders.
- Represent the research team with professionalism and cultural sensitivity during community interactions.
5. Data Storage and Confidentiality
- Ensure secure storage of all data and materials collected, in compliance with research ethics and institutional guidelines.
- Handle all data with strict confidentiality, upholding participants’ privacy at all times.
6. Data Coding and Analysis Support
- Assist in coding qualitative data and charting patterns using qualitative analysis software, such as NVIVO.
- Generate summaries and reports for interviews and FGDs under the guidance of the research team.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate for the position of Field Enumerator should possess the following qualifications, skills, and attributes:
Minimum Requirements
- Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili is mandatory.
Desirable Qualifications
- Prior experience in field data collection, especially in social and behavioral science research.
- Familiarity with qualitative data collection methods such as IDIs and FGDs.
- Experience using digital data collection tools like ODK or REDCap.
- Basic knowledge of data analysis software such as NVIVO is an added advantage.
