The Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA) is inviting dynamic, driven, and detail-oriented individuals to apply for the Member Engagement Intern position based in Nairobi, Kenya. AMDA was established by private sector minigrid developers and development partners with a common goal: to create a supportive policy and financial ecosystem for minigrid companies across Africa. The association serves as the unified voice of minigrid developers and works closely with stakeholders to ensure the realization of universal access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

Our core focus areas include:

  • Member Services & Support: Helping minigrid developers build sustainable businesses through enhanced governance and support services.
  • Access to Capital: Improving members’ access to financing by facilitating communication between developers and investors.
  • Policy, Regulatory & Regional Coordination: Engaging policymakers and regulators to cultivate a conducive environment for minigrid expansion.
  • Research, Data & Standards: Generating reliable data and sector insights to drive evidence-based decision-making and standardization.

As AMDA grows and enhances its support to minigrid stakeholders, the Member Engagement Intern will play a key role in improving service delivery and strengthening member relations.

Job Description

The Member Engagement Intern will contribute significantly to AMDA’s efforts to deliver high-value services to its members. The successful candidate will help implement the Member Engagement Strategy by supporting various projects, managing communications, and improving internal tools and processes. This role is ideal for a proactive self-starter who is passionate about sustainability, energy access, and member-oriented service.


Key Responsibilities

As a Member Engagement Intern at AMDA, you will:

  • Support the implementation of the association’s Member Engagement strategy, including but not limited to:
    • Drafting summaries of member achievements for use in newsletters and social media.
    • Gathering and sharing relevant sector updates, funding opportunities, and events in biweekly member newsletters.
    • Assisting in planning and executing member events, including webinars, in-person meetings, and networking functions.
    • Sourcing quotations and managing logistics for venues, catering, and event invitations.
    • Compiling useful resources in digestible and accessible formats for member use.
  • Help maintain and update AMDA’s member database:
    • Inputting contact information, membership status, communications history, and relevant notes from interactions with members.
    • Ensuring that member data is current and accessible to relevant staff.
  • Create compelling visual and written member engagement materials:
    • This includes brochures, one-pagers, presentations, call scripts, application forms, and feedback surveys.
    • Assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for recurring activities within the Member Engagement function.
  • Draft and send member communications:
    • Writing professional emails concerning announcements, opportunities, membership invoices, and general updates.
  • Provide administrative support to the Member Engagement team:
    • Take meeting notes, prepare summaries, and track action points.
    • Support with documentation and data collection tasks.
  • Assist in onboarding new members:
    • Review membership applications, coordinate onboarding sessions, and ensure new members receive welcome kits and relevant materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in any relevant field.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience in a corporate, nonprofit, or startup setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • A proactive mindset and willingness to take initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Additional Skills That Give You an Edge

While not required, candidates with the following experience or skills will have an added advantage:

  • Fluency in multiple languages (especially French or Portuguese).
  • Knowledge of the renewable energy/off-grid power industry, climate change, or sustainability sectors.
  • Experience in startups or small team environments.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva or similar platforms.
  • Experience working with CRM or member management databases.
