As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence in research, APHRC is seeking to recruit a team of 66 Field Interviewers to support data collection activities for an upcoming research study. The fieldwork will take place in multiple counties across Kenya. This is a short-term engagement for individuals passionate about data, community interaction, and driving impactful research outcomes.

Job Description
Field Interviewers will play a critical role in the successful implementation of this research project. The responsibilities of Field Interviewers are centered around field data collection, ensuring quality control, and maintaining ethical standards during the entire study period. Selected candidates will undergo comprehensive training before beginning fieldwork.
The duties and responsibilities of Field Interviewers include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participation in Training and Progress Meetings
- Attend all scheduled training sessions organized by APHRC to understand the study objectives, methodology, and data collection tools.
- Participate in regular progress and debriefing meetings to report on field experiences, challenges, and emerging issues.
- Mobilization of Study Participants
- Identify and engage with potential study participants within the assigned location.
- Sensitize community members on the objectives of the study, ensuring transparency and community cooperation.
- Build rapport with participants to enhance trust and willingness to participate in the study.
- Informed Consent Process
- Clearly explain the study’s purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits to potential participants.
- Ensure voluntary participation by obtaining informed consent in accordance with ethical guidelines and APHRC protocols.
- Data Collection
- Conduct structured interviews using digital tools provided by APHRC (e.g., tablets or smartphones).
- Adhere strictly to the study instruments and ensure accurate recording of responses.
- Maintain neutrality and professionalism while interacting with participants.
- Follow data quality control standards as defined by the research team.
- Data Submission and Reporting
- Complete and submit data collected daily within agreed timelines.
- Maintain high accuracy and completeness of collected data to ensure reliability.
- Compile and submit daily work progress reports to the immediate supervisor, detailing completed interviews, challenges faced, and any unusual observations.
- Safeguarding Equipment and Tools
- Take full responsibility for the safety, functionality, and confidentiality of all assigned tools and materials (e.g., tablets, consent forms).
- Ensure data security and prevent unauthorized access to any study-related information or equipment.
- Availability During Study Period
- Be available and committed to work full-time on the project for the entire duration of the study.
- Be flexible with working hours, including weekends, as dictated by field schedules.
- Demonstrate resilience and adaptability in challenging or remote environments.
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
To be considered for the Field Interviewer position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Technical Competence
- Proficiency in using MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated experience with digital data collection tools, including mobile-based platforms like Open Data Kit (ODK), REDCap, SurveyCTO, or similar systems.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Excellent communication skills in English and Kiswahili; additional proficiency in local languages of the target counties is an added advantage.
- Ability to conduct interviews professionally and empathetically.
- Strong listening skills and attention to detail when documenting participant responses.
- Teamwork and Independence
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in diverse settings.
- Self-driven and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and time management abilities to meet deadlines consistently.
- Ethical Integrity
- Familiarity with research ethics, including principles of informed consent, participant confidentiality, and respectful engagement with study participants.
- Demonstrated personal integrity and commitment to ethical research practices.
- Additional Considerations
- Prior experience working as a field interviewer or enumerator in a similar role is highly desirable.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote areas of the designated counties.
- Must be available for the full duration of training and data collection period as determined by the study schedule.
