Job Description

Reporting directly to the Manager – Fiber To The Home & Business Planning & Design, the selected candidate will be responsible for the planning, design, and rollout of FTTH and FTTB network infrastructure. This includes oversight of budgeting, database management, and preparation of project documents such as POCs and RFQs.

You will play a central role in delivering cutting-edge transmission solutions that support our fiber-based products and services to homes and businesses, in alignment with Safaricom’s long-term strategic goals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Transmission Planning:
    Deliver timely and high-quality transmission plans using Fiber and GPON technology in line with project schedules, ensuring proper capacity threshold dimensioning for availability and reliability.
  • Network Resilience:
    Develop resilient FTTH/B transmission solutions that accommodate present, medium, and long-term business needs.
  • Mapping & Documentation:
    Compile topology maps, schematics, Google Earth routes, building entry points, and floor plans in GIS formats for accurate design representation.
  • Resource Utilization:
    Ensure optimal usage of infrastructure resources including fiber materials, spares, bandwidths, fiber cores, and ducts in line with KPI targets and organizational standards.
  • Budget Estimation & Justification:
    Create project budget estimates and prioritize initiatives based on business needs while providing strong CAPEX justifications.
  • Design Review & BOQs:
    Review Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for FTTx designs including Fiber to the Home, to the Business, and to the Node, ensuring accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
  • Project Cost Reconciliation:
    Reconcile project costs by comparing business case assumptions, change requests, and as-built statuses.
  • KPI Compliance:
    Ensure capacity and quality key performance indicators are consistently met in line with transmission targets.
  • Database Accuracy:
    Maintain up-to-date and accurate site information within the Safaricom fiber database.
  • Bottleneck Management:
    Identify and mitigate potential bottlenecks early to enhance network uptime and service quality.
  • Transmission Standards Compliance:
    Adopt industry-standard transmission parameters and best practices for consistent service delivery.
  • Feature Enhancements:
    Implement new network features according to the strategic roadmap to boost network quality.
  • Performance Evaluation:
    Plan, review, and evaluate network performance based on your design input and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • System Testing:
    Develop integration and functional acceptance test documentation for every new system, product, or service introduced.
  • Technology Research:
    Conduct ongoing research into new technologies and practices in the fiber space to maintain innovation and competitive advantage.
  • Trial Evaluation:
    Evaluate the reliability and cost-effectiveness of new trials within the network, assessing their adaptability to future technologies.
