Job Description
The Engineer – Fixed Solutions Architecture will be responsible for developing and implementing the network architecture for Safaricom’s fixed broadband solutions. This includes working with technologies such as FTTX and fixed wireless access to ensure the network is cost-effective, resilient, scalable, and aligned with the organization’s strategic goals.
This role will demand a highly collaborative approach, working with cross-functional teams including fiber deployment, customer support, commercial, and vendor teams to ensure efficient and innovative delivery of fixed broadband services across the country.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning & Optimization
- Design and plan Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) to ensure optimized coverage and minimize fault exposure.
- Forecast traffic and subscriber trends for fixed services, planning for capacity upgrades and licensing requirements.
- Design, plan, and implement broadband gateway nodes for fixed services.
- Network Implementation
- Install, configure, upgrade, and commission service access nodes for FTTX services.
- Ensure timely commissioning of metro switches, Multi-Service Access Nodes, Optical Line Terminals, and broadband network gateways.
- Service Experience Management
- Assist technical support teams in identifying root causes for persistent issues in residential fixed services.
- Recommend and implement network optimization solutions to enhance user experience.
- Automation & Efficiency
- Design and implement automation workflows for repetitive tasks such as service activation, modification, and deactivation.
- Utilize network automation tools, APIs, scripting, and Netconf protocols for service provisioning, reporting, and data collection.
- Innovation & Technology Evaluation
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies in fixed broadband and wireless access networks.
- Conduct trials, proof of concept initiatives, and technology sourcing for new infrastructure and solutions.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Engagement
- Maintain ongoing performance reviews and discussions with vendors and suppliers.
- Work closely with internal teams and commercial departments to align technical solutions with business goals.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Ensure proper documentation for all implemented projects.
- Enhance analytics and reporting for key customer and network service KPIs.
- Collaboration Across Teams
- Work with other engineering and technology teams to maintain, optimize, and evolve fixed broadband services.
- Provide technical insights for the introduction of new and existing service offerings.

Ideal Candidate Profile
- Hands-on experience in the planning, implementation, and automation of fixed broadband networks.
- Sound knowledge of Passive Optical Network (PON) architecture and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solutions (4G/5G and unlicensed microwave).
- Proficiency in network design, commissioning of network elements, and service provisioning tools.
- Ability to analyze protocols, inspect traffic, and carry out end-to-end network diagnostics.
- Strong collaboration and vendor management skills, with a proven ability to align technical solutions with business strategies.
- Experience in scripting, APIs, and automation protocols for network efficiency.
