About the Role
The Senior Officer, Data Protection plays a central role in driving M-Pesa Africa’s data privacy and compliance agenda. You will be responsible for executing compliance programmes, embedding privacy principles into product development, coordinating data protection reviews, and fostering a strong internal culture of compliance. Reporting to the Manager, Risk & Compliance, this role demands a proactive, analytical, and collaborative approach to managing data governance and privacy risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and Advise:
Offer guidance on data governance practices, evaluate processing activities, and provide actionable input on potential data breaches across M-Pesa Africa operations. - Monitor Compliance:
Ensure adherence to local and international data protection laws and regulations across all markets where M-Pesa Africa operates. - Policy Implementation:
Support the development and enforcement of data protection policies and procedures to uphold compliance across the organization. - Awareness and Training:
Conduct organization-wide awareness sessions and training programs aimed at building a culture of data protection among internal stakeholders. - Data Processing Records:
Identify, assess, and maintain an updated inventory of M-Pesa Africa’s data processing operations. - Risk & Compliance Assessments:
Carry out Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and provide risk-based recommendations on privacy matters. - Data Management Oversight:
Supervise internal procedures for managing data and ensuring privacy compliance across departments and systems. - Privacy by Design:
Advocate and implement privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default approaches in new product and system development. - Agile Integration:
Work closely with product teams to integrate privacy controls into the SAFE Agile implementation framework. - Training Coordination:
Oversee internal compliance training programs and collaborate with the Group Privacy Team on joint initiatives. - Monitoring and Reporting:
Lead regular monitoring activities and provide quarterly reports on the state of the privacy program and regulatory compliance. - Stakeholder Collaboration:
Support the activities of Data Protection and Compliance Champions, ensuring they are fully equipped to reinforce data protection practices across departments. - Behavioural Change:
Champion a culture of ethical compliance by influencing behaviors and decisions throughout the organization.
