Job Description

As a Coffee Trader, you will be a critical player in our trading team, responsible for managing the purchasing and selling of Kenyan coffee. This role involves deep engagement in developing the local supply chain and identifying new trading opportunities. You will assist in monitoring trade positions, reporting performance, managing risk, and executing trading strategies on behalf of Louis Dreyfus Commodities Kenya.

You will work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure efficient execution of trades, maintain documentation, support logistical coordination, and develop market intelligence that supports sound trading decisions. Your role will require a balance of analytical capability, market insight, and interpersonal skills to foster long-term relationships with clients and suppliers.


Key Responsibilities

1. Trade Execution and Strategy

  • Execute purchases and sales of Kenyan coffee in accordance with LDC trading strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of trading activities, ensuring compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the management of trade positions, collaborating with local and international teams to align trade flows with business objectives.
  • Monitor and update the trading Profit & Loss (PnL) reports, ensuring all positions are tracked and analyzed in real time.

2. Market Intelligence and Analysis

  • Assist in the preparation of coffee market reports, drawing from both local and global sources.
  • Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify price trends, supply and demand dynamics, and macroeconomic factors influencing the coffee market.
  • Monitor competitor activities, market developments, and identify barriers to entry in the regional trading landscape.

3. Relationship Management

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and key stakeholders across the coffee value chain.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with clients regarding product offerings, delivery schedules, pricing, and payment terms.
  • Follow up on outstanding payments and address potential client defaults with appropriate solutions and internal escalation when necessary.

4. Supply Chain and Operations Coordination

  • Develop and expand the local supply chain by identifying new sourcing opportunities, including working with smallholder farmers and cooperatives.
  • Liaise with operations and logistics teams to ensure timely execution and delivery of coffee shipments.
  • Ensure that contractual obligations are met and that all trade-related documentation is complete, verified, and compliant.

5. Risk Management and Compliance

  • Monitor risk exposure and credit terms associated with each trading activity.
  • Work closely with internal risk and compliance departments to uphold trading standards and corporate governance.
  • Implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies to protect LDC’s financial interests.

6. Administrative and Platform Reporting

  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of all contractual agreements and trades.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports to platform managers and other senior personnel.
  • Assist in the verification and approval of all trade-related documentation and contracts.

Experience and Knowledge

This role requires a comprehensive understanding of both local and international coffee markets, with a strong foundation in trading principles and analytics. The following knowledge areas are essential for success in this position:

  • Sound knowledge of Kenyan coffee grades and qualities.
  • Thorough understanding of cash and futures markets as they apply to commodities.
  • Familiarity with regional and global supply and demand trends within the coffee industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, particularly in using advanced formulas and models for financial and market analysis.
  • Working knowledge of macro and microeconomic principles and their impact on commodity trading.
  • Foundational knowledge of finance and accounting principles, especially within trading contexts.
