Job Description:
The ECDE Teacher will be responsible for providing a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for children under their care. The teacher will be expected to create a secure setting where young children can grow emotionally, intellectually, socially, and physically. This role requires a hands-on individual with a genuine passion for early childhood development and a demonstrated capacity to engage young learners effectively.
The ECDE Teacher’s primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Child Care and Supervision
- Attend to the daily needs of infants and toddlers, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and hygiene needs.
- Ensure that children under care are supervised at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
- Monitor children’s behavior and physical health and take appropriate measures when a child is ill or distressed.
- Curriculum Implementation and Learning Activities
- Design and implement age-appropriate learning and play activities aimed at stimulating mental, physical, and emotional growth.
- Prepare weekly and daily lesson plans in line with ECDE guidelines.
- Engage children in storytelling, singing, dancing, creative art, and other interactive learning activities.
- Child Development Monitoring
- Observe and assess each child’s development, documenting milestones and behavioral patterns.
- Maintain individual records for all children and report developmental concerns to parents and relevant administrators.
- Encourage positive social interaction among children and guide them in conflict resolution where necessary.
- Health, Safety, and Emergency Preparedness
- Ensure that the care centre environment is clean, safe, and well-organized at all times.
- Conduct routine checks on the safety of equipment and classroom materials.
- Respond swiftly and appropriately to accidents, injuries, or other emergencies, employing first aid as needed.
- Communication and Parent Engagement
- Maintain open and effective communication with parents/guardians regarding their children’s welfare and progress.
- Organize and participate in parent-teacher meetings and consultation sessions.
- Offer guidance and resources to parents on child development and home-based care practices.
- Teamwork and Institutional Support
- Work collaboratively with other caregivers and administrative staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Participate in staff training sessions and workshops organized by the University.
- Uphold the core values of the University, including integrity, professionalism, and commitment to service delivery.
- Administrative and Reporting Duties
- Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports on children’s attendance, health issues, incidents, and learning outcomes.
- Maintain accurate inventory of learning and care materials and report on usage and needs.
- Assist in the preparation of annual work plans and development targets for the Baby Day Care Centre.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Possession of at least a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of C (plain) or Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) Division III.
- A Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) from a recognized institution.
In addition to the above, applicants must:
- Have undergone First Aid training and demonstrate the ability to handle emergency medical situations involving children.
- Be computer literate, with the ability to use basic educational software and maintain digital child development records.
- Have a minimum of three (3) years of relevant post-qualification experience working in a child care, nursery, or early childhood development setting.
Applicants who possess a Certificate in Child Care and Protection and/or have experience working with children with special needs will have an added advantage. These qualifications and experiences will be taken into account during the shortlisting and selection process.
