Reports to: Head of Clinical Services / Nutrition Department
Mater Misericordiae Hospital is seeking a dedicated and qualified Nutritionist to join its multidisciplinary medical team. This role is central to promoting optimal nutrition and wellness among patients through evidence-based medical nutrition therapy and patient-centered care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Participation in Ward Rounds
Join medical teams during patient ward rounds to evaluate patient health from a nutritional perspective and design comprehensive, individualized care plans. - Implementation of Individualized Nutrition Therapy
Develop nutrition strategies tailored to specific medical conditions, ensuring alignment with overall treatment goals and evidence-based practice. - Patient Education
Offer one-on-one and group counseling sessions to educate patients on dietary habits, lifestyle modifications, and long-term nutritional wellness to support recovery and disease prevention. - Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Work closely with doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure that nutritional care is fully integrated into each patient’s treatment plan. - Monitoring and Follow-Up
Evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition interventions, make necessary adjustments, and ensure consistent follow-up to track patient progress and outcomes. - Documentation and Record Keeping
Maintain thorough, accurate, and up-to-date patient records in accordance with hospital policies and confidentiality regulations. - Promotion of Wellness Programs
Lead or support hospital wellness initiatives such as health promotion workshops, preventive health seminars, and weight management programs for both patients and staff. - Special Diet Management
Prescribe and oversee the administration of specialized diets for patients with conditions that require particular nutritional interventions, such as diabetes, hypertension, renal disease, or gastrointestinal disorders. - Nutritional Needs Assessment
Conduct detailed assessments of patients’ dietary habits, health status, medical history, and lifestyle to develop personalized nutrition care plans. - Plan Development Based on Medical Conditions
Formulate customized dietary plans specifically designed to manage, treat, or improve a range of clinical conditions based on initial patient assessments.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics.
- Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI).
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a clinical or hospital environment.
- Proficient in Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).
- Proven experience in managing nutrition care for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, or renal disorders.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex nutritional advice in a clear and compassionate manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
