Position Title: Cleaner/Messenger

Reporting To: Administrative Officer / Facility Supervisor
Position Overview
The Cleaner/Messenger will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within clinic premises and ensuring smooth delivery of messages, documents, and materials across departments. This dual-role is essential to the effective daily functioning of research and clinical units at KEMRI.
The successful candidate must be proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of performing tasks independently while adhering to clinic protocols and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Cleaning and Sanitation
- Thoroughly clean clinic rooms, offices, laboratories, restrooms, corridors, and common areas on a daily basis.
- Perform scheduled deep cleaning tasks in consultation with supervisors.
- Use appropriate cleaning agents and disinfectants to maintain infection control standards.
- Waste Management
- Collect, sort, and dispose of waste in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
- Ensure proper segregation of recyclable and non-recyclable materials.
- Maintain clean and hygienic waste disposal areas.
- Maintenance and Inventory
- Maintain cleaning equipment and tools in good working condition.
- Promptly report any equipment malfunctions or supply shortages.
- Keep an inventory of cleaning supplies and request replenishments as needed.
- Messenger Duties
- Deliver internal and external mail, documents, and packages promptly and securely.
- Run errands for departments as directed by administrative staff.
- Assist in the movement of office materials, including documents and lightweight supplies.
- Operational Support
- Help in setting up rooms for meetings, training sessions, or special events.
- Perform minor facility maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs and reporting repair issues.
- Offer additional support to clinic staff and researchers during busy periods.
- Compliance and Safety
- Adhere strictly to hygiene protocols and infection prevention measures.
- Follow clinic and institutional rules regarding safety procedures and privacy.
- Attend mandatory training on hygiene, safety, and clinic protocols.
Mandatory Qualifications and Core Requirements
To be considered for the position, candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- Educational Qualification
- Must have completed a minimum of secondary education (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or equivalent).
- Work Environment Adaptability
- Willingness to learn and adapt to clinic protocols, including infection control measures and institutional procedures.
- Capacity to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Health and Physical Capacity
- Demonstrated physical ability to carry out cleaning tasks and lift/move light to moderate loads.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as operational needs dictate.
- Workplace Competence and Character
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and hardworking, with a positive work ethic.
- Language and Communication
- Must possess basic communication skills in English to understand instructions and communicate with staff.
- Ability to interact with both clinical and administrative teams professionally.
- Safety and Certification
- Must be willing to undergo formal training in clinic hygiene and safety protocols.
- Should have or be willing to obtain certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection (HSP).
