Job Description
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a vital role in promoting compliance with IFC’s Performance Standards and Sustainability Policy in the Financial Intermediary (FI) sector. The responsibilities include both investment and advisory support and will encompass the full lifecycle of projects.
E&S Risk Assessment and Project Appraisal
- Lead or contribute to environmental and social risk assessment for new FI investments including banks, funds, non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), and microfinance institutions.
- Engage in the full investment process: early review, appraisal, board documentation, commitment, disbursement, and supervision.
- Draft comprehensive internal and external reports related to project environmental and social dimensions.
Client Engagement and Capacity Building
- Provide targeted E&S guidance to investment teams and clients.
- Assist clients in developing and implementing Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS).
- Collaborate with clients on identifying E&S risk mitigation strategies and enhancing their E&S performance.
Portfolio Monitoring and Compliance
- Actively monitor client compliance with E&S requirements across the project lifecycle.
- Document gaps in E&S performance and propose risk mitigation strategies.
- Evaluate Extended Project Supervision Reports (XPSRs) across the FI portfolio.
Institutional Collaboration and Leadership
- Act as Regional Industry Lead (RIL) for the FI sector, ensuring consistency and quality in E&S support.
- Lead interactions with internal stakeholders such as Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) and Independent Evaluation Group (IEG).
- Participate in policy interpretation and corporate knowledge sharing efforts.
Supervision and Reporting
- Oversee short-term consultants (STCs), ensuring quality and timely delivery.
- Prepare management briefs and contribute to regional supervision program reviews.
Selection Criteria
- Education: Master’s degree in environmental sciences, engineering, or other relevant disciplines.
- Experience: At least 10 years of professional experience in E&S due diligence, compliance monitoring, or risk management — preferably in financial institutions and within Africa.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Proven experience with IFC Performance Standards or equivalent frameworks.
- Understanding of E&S challenges in fragile and conflict-affected regions.
- Analytical and Communication Skills:
- Strong analytical mindset and ability to distill complex data into practical solutions.
- Proficient in clear, concise, and persuasive communication to both expert and non-expert audiences.
- Languages:
- Fluency in English is essential.
- Proficiency in French is an added advantage.
- Interpersonal and Project Management:
- Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
- High emotional intelligence, integrity, and diplomacy when managing sensitive issues.
