The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit a highly motivated and talented Research Officer (RO) with a proven track record of research in the field of environmental health with quantitative data analysis expertise to work within the West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Dakar. The RO is going to work within the Environment Climate and Health (ECH) Unit of the West Africa Regional Office. The Unit’s research work focuses on environmental health including climate change and health amongst other topics.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the routine activities of the Unit research projects;
- Ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained;
- Contribute to research tools dvelopment for use in data collection, training manuals and field guides to use for data collection;
- Coordinate recruitment, training and supervision of field workers;
- Coordinate field work and be responsible for data quality check;
- Mobilize and inform the community about the research project;
- Prepare regular field and project reports writing;
- Lead or contribute to quantitative and/or qualitative data management and analyses of the assigned projects;
- Collaborate with scientists with an interdisciplinary team;
- Contribute to proposal development to strengthen scientific knowledge in environment, climate and health research work or related fields;
- Take lead in preparing progress and end-of-grant reports to funders;
- Assist in the translation of project documents from English to French and vice versa;
- Conduct literature review and participate in writing scientific papers;
- Prepare policy briefs and fact sheets from projects findings
- Participate in policy dialogue and dissemination of research findings with relevant audiences;
- Perform other duties as required assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, skills and experience :
- Master’s degree in any of the following areas: Public health, Environmental Health, Geography, Statistics or related disciplines;
- At least 3 years of professional experience following completion of the Master’s degree, preferably in a research setting;
- Experience in conducting field research/surveys for quantitative data and in managing research projects and teams. Experience in qualitative methods will be an added advantage;
- Experience in managing teams of field workers for quantitative data collection;
- Proficiency in oral and written communication in French and English;
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, balance multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines;
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work with people from diverse cultures;
- Good computer literacy skills ;
- Knowledge of multiple statistical software packages such as STATA and R;
- Experience in engaging policy makers with research evidence;
- Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines.
