Main Purpose of the Role
The Safety Officer plays a vital role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Safety Management System (SMS) under AMREF Flying Doctors’ AOC (Air Operator Certificate) and AMO (Approved Maintenance Organization). This includes providing technical and administrative support, promoting a safety-first culture, coordinating safety programs and drills, and managing safety records.
The role demands close coordination with both the Flight Operations Unit (for AOC matters) and the Maintenance Department (for AMO matters), with regular reporting to the Head of Safety.
Job Description
The Safety Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Safety Records and Database Management
- Manage and update safety records in compliance with internal procedures and external regulations.
- Maintain the electronic Safety Management System (eSMS) and associated databases.
- Ensure all safety data entries are accurate and up-to-date.
Safety Promotion and Training
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture within the organization.
- Support development and dissemination of safety bulletins, newsflashes, and newsletters.
- Assist in the development and delivery of safety and Emergency Response Plan (ERP) training.
- Maintain accurate training records and materials.
Hazard and Risk Management
- Conduct investigations into hazards and incidents.
- Perform operational risk assessments and gap analyses in line with SMS protocols.
- Document all safety activities in accordance with the SMS Manual.
Safety Governance
- Assist in organizing and implementing Safety Review Board (SRB) and Internal Safety Meetings.
- Coordinate and monitor ERP drills and safety exercises as required.
- Develop and maintain the Management of Change (MOC) procedures.
- Monitor and report on safety performance targets.
Regulatory Reporting and Compliance
- Ensure timely reporting of incidents and accidents to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
- Support continuous improvement in compliance with Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs).
Other Duties
- Provide technical support to safety functions across departments.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Head of Safety.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of consecutive work experience in the aviation industry focusing on safety and/or quality.
- Technical qualification in either flight operations or aircraft maintenance.
- Completion of Safety Management System (SMS) training from a recognized institution.
- Quality Management System (QMS) training is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in ICT tools and safety-related software systems.
- Solid working knowledge of KCARs.
