Job Summary:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is offering an internship opportunity within the Environment & Social Safeguards (ESS) Unit, under the Policy and Programme Division. Based at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, the intern will support UNEP’s Environmental and Social Sustainability Framework (ESSF), which guides the organization in identifying and managing environmental and social risks in its projects and programmes.
Key Responsibilities:
The intern will assist in enhancing the implementation of the ESSF by supporting project screening and risk categorization, analyzing safeguards documentation, and helping ensure alignment with environmental and social standards. Tasks may include conducting research, reviewing project proposals, supporting the development of guidance materials, and assisting with data management and reporting. The intern may also contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives, training support, and monitoring tools used across UNEP and with partners.
Requirements:
Applicants must be enrolled in or have recently completed graduate-level studies in environmental studies, social sciences, sustainability, international development, or a related discipline. Strong analytical, research, and writing skills are essential. Knowledge of environmental and social safeguards, risk assessment, and development cooperation processes is highly desirable. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
