Job Description: Driver II
As a Driver II in the public service, the appointed individuals will be responsible for supporting the transportation and mobility needs of government operations within the Ministry of Education. The role is essential in ensuring the efficient and safe movement of personnel, documents, and other logistics between departments and across counties.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to:
- Operate Authorized Motor Vehicles
- Drive government vehicles for official duties as assigned by authorized personnel.
- Ensure adherence to traffic rules and government transport regulations.
- Routine Vehicle Inspection
- Conduct daily checks on the vehicle’s cooling, oil, electrical, and braking systems to ensure roadworthiness.
- Report any malfunctions or defects to relevant authorities for timely repair and maintenance.
- Maintain Vehicle Documentation
- Properly manage and update work tickets for each trip, indicating mileage, fuel consumption, and service records.
- Log all movement and official engagements with accuracy.
- Safety and Security
- Ensure the safety of the vehicle, passengers, and goods in transit.
- Maintain a vigilant approach to security both on and off the road.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance
- Keep the vehicle clean and presentable at all times.
- Coordinate with the relevant departments for scheduled servicing.
- Accident and Emergency Handling
- Be prepared to respond to emergency situations and support the safety of passengers using acquired first-aid knowledge.
Qualifications and Requirements for Appointment
To be considered for the Driver II position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Academic Qualifications
- Possess a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a Mean Grade of D plain or an equivalent qualification recognized in Kenya.
- Driving License
- Hold a valid driving license free from any current endorsements for the class(es) of vehicles to be driven.
- First Aid Certification
- Must have successfully completed a First Aid Certificate Course of at least one (1) week. Acceptable institutions include:
- St. John Ambulance
- Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT)
- Other certified and recognized training institutions
- Must have successfully completed a First Aid Certificate Course of at least one (1) week. Acceptable institutions include:
- Suitability Test
- Must have passed the Suitability Test for Grade III, as administered by a recognized training institution or the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
- Good Conduct
- Provide a current Police Clearance Certificate (Certificate of Good Conduct) indicating no criminal record or adverse endorsements.
- Work Experience
- A minimum of two (2) years of active driving experience in a reputable organization or institution, with demonstrable knowledge of vehicle mechanics and logistics handling.
Skills and Competencies
In addition to the formal qualifications, the ideal candidate must demonstrate the following competencies:
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within teams
- Punctuality, integrity, and high ethical standards
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance
- Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision
- Familiarity with regional routes and government offices is an added advantage
Deployment
The 200 successful candidates will be deployed across the 47 counties of Kenya to support the operations of the Ministry of Education. This ensures a decentralized approach to service delivery and aligns with the government’s goal of reaching every citizen with efficiency and reliability.
Each officer will report to a designated Transport Officer or Administrative Officer within the county or regional office. The Ministry emphasizes a performance-based culture, and periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess job performance, conduct, and commitment to public service standards.
